Some functions of the skeletal system are:

Supports the body

The skeletal system supports the body by using the cartilage and bones in your body to provide stability.

Protects organs

Our bones act as a forcefield around our organs. An example of bones protecting organs is the skull protecting the brain and the ribs protecting the heart.

Mineral Storage, Energy Storage, and Hematopoiesis

Our bone tissue plays extremely important roles in the skeletal system. First, the bone matrix which is "the intercellular substance of bone tissue" acts as a holding tank for minerals. Calcium and Phosphorus are two critical minerals to maintain balance in the bloodstream. Second, our bones also store fat to create new blood cells in our bone marrow. Lastly Red Marrow is where Hematopoiesis takes place. Hematopoiesis is the production of new blood cells.

One of the many diseases that occur in the musculoskeletal system is rheumatoid arthritis. This is an autoimmune disorder when your immune system accidentally attacks your body's tissues. Sometimes it can irritate more than just your joints. People also experience problems with other body systems including the heart, lungs, skin, eyes, and blood vessels. In the beginning stages of rheumatoid arthritis, the disease affects smaller joints like fingers and toes. As it spreads it intrudes into larger joints like your wrists, knees, ankles, elbows, hips, and shoulders. Rheumatoid arthritis is very different from osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis happens when cartilage is constantly being worn down by the friction of joints. Rheumatoid arthritis affects the lining of your joints which causes excruciating swelling that results in joint separation, bone erosion, and deformity (shown in the picture above).

"A rheumatologist is an internal medicine physician with subspecialized training in rheumatology. This medical specialty deals with musculoskeletal conditions, as well as autoimmune and inflammatory conditions in people of all ages. Many of these conditions may run in families." Rheumatologist doctors particularly treat and have the most knowledge of inflammatory diseases. They also treat many other conditions such as inherited disorders, tendon issues, and muscle injuries.

To pursue becoming a rheumatologist, training starts with an undergraduate bachelor's degree and, directly after that, four years of medical school curriculum (an MD).

When you complete medical school a residency of 3 years is required. During the residency, you need a focus on internal medicine either in adults or pediatrics. After residency, a doctor must pass the internal medicine or pediatric board exam to sub-specialize.

But wait! That's not even near close to becoming a certified rheumatologist. You also need to complete a 2-3 year fellowship. During your residency, you learn about a variety of diseases and disorders, but during fellowship, you treat cases that are specifically for rheumatologists. Think of it as shadowing and learning from the best rheumatologist so that you can learn everything you need to know to specialize in that specific area.

In Texas, the top earner's annual pay of a rheumatologist is $253,410, and the monthly pay is $21,117.

Matt Iseman, who is an actor, comedian, and host of American Ninja Warrior, was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) in 2002. He had been having symptoms for 18 months. His symptoms were "pain in my right index finger and then spread to my feet, back, and neck. I was always exhausted and often sleeping up to 14 hours a day. I had been an athlete all my life but couldn't work out at all and eventually gained 55 pounds. I saw a range of doctors, but no one could tell me what was wrong."

When he finally met with a doctor who diagnosed him with RA, he was started on a biological treatment to reduce the inflammation. Iseman has kept a very positive mindset throughout his journey with RA. He works with the Arthritis Foundation to encourage others that live with this disease. Matt Iseman says “I have RA but it is not who I am,"
