Approximately two decades ago back in 1999, the term "Internet of Things" was coined by Kevin Ashton in his presentation of the same title on a then-new technology called RFID, radio-frequency identification. Prior to this, IoT was only known as "embedded internet" or "pervasive computing".

https://iot-analytics.com/internet-of-things-definition/

Around the same time that IoT gained popularity, a series of different terms emerged to identify different classes of items connected to the internet. Some of the terms include:

M2M - Machine to Machine communication initially used for one-to-one connection between machines. Today, data can be more easily transmitted to multiple machines on the same network.
Industrial Internet (of Things) - Used by GE. Beyond M2M by using the connection between machines and also human interfaces.
Internet of Things (IoT) - Simply put...a "thing" that can sense and collect data and send it to the internet.
Internet (as we know it) - Only connects people at its core. (via the graph below)

Web of Things - Focuses on Software architecture

Internet of Everything (IoE) - Incorporates all connections that someone can imagine.

Industry 4.0 - Pushed for by the German government and narrowed to the scope of industrial manufacturing environments and described as the industrial revolution. Industry 4.0 includes technology that creates real changes to the physical world such as 3D printing and augmented reality (AR) hardware.

https://iot-analytics.com/internet-of-things-definition/
