Captain cook's arrival in Hawaii was such a significant event in Hawaiian history and without him I think Hawaii would of turned out very differently. First of all who was Captain Cook? What did he do to impact Hawaii? The Hawaiian islands were unknown to Europeans until Captain Cook had discovered it. Captain Cook was on his third voyage when he stumbled across Kauai. He was the first westerner to discover Hawaii. He was also one of the first people to make Hawaii known to the public. When he made his arrival at Kauai some of the Hawaiians were invited onto his ship and decided to take metal since they had never seen it before and due to their belief that items not under kapu were common property. These two small events would lead to many political, social, and economic changes in the future of Hawaii.

How did Captain cook's arrival have anything to do with the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom? The two things might not seem related but Captain Cook's arrival to Hawaii and the fact he put Hawaii in the public eye changed everything. Captain Cook without knowing it established important new items of trade that would be important in Hawaii's future politics and economics. He provided the Hawaiians with goats, pigs, and seeds from his ship. The iron and metal that the Hawaiians took from his ship were another one of the objects that would affect Hawaii's future. European involvement had impacted and shaped the culture of Hawaii and Captain cook was just the first proper introduction to anything western. His journey marked the beginning of the flood of missionaries and foreigners to the Hawaiian islands.

First off who was King Kamehameha? King Kamehameha was one of the most impressive figures in Hawaiian history. He had decided to invade the shores of Waikiki. many of Oahu’s warriors were killed but after a while of bloody battle the king of Kauai peacefully surrendered his land to Kamehameha to avoid further casualties of his citizens. Just like that Kamehameha had successfully united all the Hawaiian islands under one rule. Him uniting the Hawaiian islands changed Hawaiian history forever and this event would have major effects in the future.

Kamehameha Uniting the islands would forever change Hawaiian history. The event of the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom might not seem related to Kamehameha uniting the Hawaiian islands but this was just one of the events that slowly led up to it. After Kamehameha had united the islands it was pretty peaceful and Hawaii seemed to be evolving with no substantial outside contact. Suddenly when Captain Cook's arrival took place and western culture started to work its way into the Hawaiians economy and political systems. Kamehameha started to purchase artillery from various foreign sources which continued to be western cultures becoming a part of Hawaii. For a while tho the unification of Hawaii prevented any outside invaders from gaining dominance over Hawaii.

What is the kapu system? The kapu system was a system of regulation and laws that focused on gender roles, politics, and religion. For example, women and men were restricted from eating together. Women were restricted from eating pork, coconuts, bananas, and so many other foods. The punishment for disregarding these laws put in place was often death. The kapu system was sacred and used in Hawaii up until 1819. Liholiho declared an end to the kapu system. He had eaten and drank with a woman, breaking the important eating kapu. Unknowingly the end of the kapu system destroyed most of the religious and supernatural foundations of the Hawaiian political structure.

The ending of the kapu system affected Hawaii socially. Not only did it do this but it also had an effect on the eventual overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom. The ending of the kapu system affected Hawaii socially. it was completely detrimental to most of the Hawaiian population since kapu had directly affected every aspect of Hawaiian life and culture. It was taken away so suddenly causing Hawaiians to feel completely directionless. This in turn aided the teachings of Christianity from missionaries. Since the Hawaiians were looking for a new direction since the kapu system was abolished they obey blindly obeyed the new teachings of Christianity.

Whalers arrive in Hawaii (1819)

Whalers arriving in Hawaii had a major effect on Hawaii's trade system. As sandalwood supplies started to decrease and their values of it dropped the whaling industry started to fill its economic void. When whalers first arrived in Hawaii it didn't seem like a big deal, in fact, whaling seemed to produce things of use such as oil heading, lamps, industrial machines, bones, corsets, and many more things like this. Although it did produce many items, because of the increased need for whales to create these products whalers almost hunted them to death. Humpback whales almost went entirely extinct. The whaling industry was also yet just another thing that started to westernize and change Hawaii's culture.

Whalers arriving in Hawaii had a giant economic impact on Hawaii. Not only this but it also directly affected the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Whaling ships began to sail farther into the Pacific in search for a larger supply of whales. After a while they discovered that there were large concentrations of sperm whales off the coast of japan, sending more whalers off to this area. The only problem was that Japanese ports were closed to foreign ships. So instead they decided to use Hawaii as a port since it was closest. Hawaii was a good stop since it provided fresh food and supplies needed to survive this caused crops in Hawaii to become a demand and Hawaiians began growing a wider variety of crops to supply the ships. The warehouses in Hawaii specifically took large profits from the whaling business since whalers could unload their cargo and have time to repair it. The income Hawaii made from whaling amounted to about 100,000 per year. So whaling definitely affected Hawaii economically. The direct interactions between these foreign people and Hawaiians started to form connections and continued to spread their western practices to Hawaii. Hawaii was getting thrown more and more into politics because of the whaling industry. These foreign connections Hawaii made with others would be just another step into the overthrow.

Missionaries arrive in Hawaii (1820)

Missionaries arriving in Hawaii doesn't sound like that big of a deal but it was a critical turning point in the history of Hawaii. The American Board of Commissioners decided to send missionaries to Hawaii to convert the Hawaiian people to Christianity. Missionaries were tasked to introduce Christianity-based schools, churches, and many more things like that. The missionaries encouraged the spread of English culture and were the reason a written form of the Hawaiian language was developed. Unknowingly while the first missionaries were introducing the Hawaiians to the concept of Christianity they started introducing their western practices which had a lasting impact on Hawaii even up until today.

Not only did missionaries arriving in Hawaii have a giant social impact, but it also was one of the main events directly leading to the overthrow of the Hawaiian

Kingdom. Since the ending of the kapu system, the Hawaiians did not rely on any religions anymore, leading them to feel directionless since they were so used to having the kapu system control every single aspect of their life. Their being directionless caused them to be vulnerable when missionaries were trying to convert everyone into Christians. They blindly obeyed the new ways of Christianity because it seemed to fill the hole that the kapu system had left in their life. Missionaries coming to Hawaii was only one of the things that contributed to the westernization of Hawaii which directly affected the overthrow. Unknowingly I think the missionary's first arrival in Hawaii was one of the bigger parts that started leading to the eventual overthrow because it was one of the first things that would influence Hawaiian politics foreign relationships and economics for centuries to come. Missionaries were the reason Hawaiians learned how to read and write which directly caused them to be able to involve in politics, missionaries also gave opportunities for Hawaii to have more foreign relationships due to all the different people coming to Hawaii to teach them about Christianity.

What was the Paulet affair? In 1943 a British warship would arrive in Honolulu Harbor. The British admiral Paulet demanded that the Hawaiian island were to be handed over to Great Britain. Paulet aimed twenty-six guns on Honolulu. The current king of Honolulu surrendered not wanting to face violence and the possible loss of lives. Although Hawaii was now under British rule it didn't last more than six months. Admiral Thomas restored Hawaii to the king realizing that it was wrong and addressing the fact Paulet overstepped his boundaries and abused his authorities. This may of just seemed like a small event that didn't really affect Hawaii but it really showed how vulnerable Hawaii could be to an overthrow.

How did the Paulet affair have anything to do with Hawaii's overthrow? Well Although the kingdom had been restored and it seemed all the consequences Paulet caused on Hawaii were reverted This event just showed the giant possibility of interference by foreigners. It showed how truly vulnerable Hawaii was to an overthrow. This would not be the end of attempts for foreigners to use Hawaii to their advantage. During the time of the Paulet affair Hawaii was a very desirable place since it became an important trading center in the middle of the pacific ocean. Because of its strange placement many would of wanted to acquire and control Hawaii.

What is the Great Mahele? The great mahele, or division of lands changed the old land titles in the island. They wanted redistribute the land, Hawaiians however did not have enough understanding of private land ownership. The great mahele after all was just a new land management system but it was based on a western economy. Due to the Hawaiians not having enough knowledge on this land ownership ended up causing Hawaiians to gain little land while the foreigners had a bigger chance of getting land since the new law was based on the western distribution of land.

The great Mahele was one of the big events that had led into the eventual overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom. It affected Hawaii economically. It might not of seemed like a big deal but since the redistribution of land was based on the western version of getting land Native Hawaiian people had a hard time trying to obtain land and when they did it often lacked resources needed to live and grow crops. The scarcity of land due to foreigners taking up all of it led to the Native Hawaiians being left without land or a home and instead all the land was given to the missionaries. All the missionaries taking over the land and housing was yet another one of the things leading to the overthrow since missionaries started to take up more of the population and things were becoming more and more westernized. This event in general just showed that the Hawaiians had a hard time understanding western culture and when more and more of it started to get implemented into the economy of Hawaii it led to Hawaiians being stripped of a lot of their belongings due to their lack of understanding. In conclusion the great mahele affected the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom economically.

The Kuleana act had lasting geographical effects on Hawaii. Well what was the Kuleana act and why was it created? The kuleana act created a system for private land ownership because at some point foreigners wanted a share of the Hawaiians land so the Hawaiians started to sell that to them. This started a problem of the land availability in Hawaii.

How did the Kuleana act affect the overthrow of Hawaii? The kuleana act was one of the first things that kind of brought the idea and suggested selling land for money. Most Hawaiians were selling their land to foreigners and since there was such a small amount of available land foreigners started to take up most of the population. Land was starting to get treated more like how western culture treated it, currency rather than the traditional Hawaiian way of thinking of it which was just as shared land. The foreigners who bought the land eventually started to gain more and more power and some of these men who bought the land would eventually be a part of the Hawaiian League which directly caused the overthrow of Hawaii.

What was the bayonet constitution? Well the bayonet constitution was made to transfer the power from the monarchy to people with elite status. King Kalakaua was held at gunpoint and forced to sign the drafted constitution. This constitution would affect the political system of how much power a monarch held. This changed Hawaii forever and eventually helped lead up to the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom.

The bayonet constitution would affect the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom. This constitution basically stripped King Kalakaua of all of his power as a Monarch. The bayonet constitution would also be what left future Queen, Liliuokalani almost no power which was actually one of the reasons for the overthrow. Her lack of power left her with nothing to do but surrender Hawaii. The bayonet constitution not only left Hawaii more powerless but it also was the things that pushed, helped, and supported organizations that advocated for the annexation of Hawaii. This is how the bayonet constitution affected the overthrow of Hawaii.

What was the Hawaiian League? The Hawaiian League was an organization made to try and get rid of Hawaii as a monarchy and re-establish it as a republic. Ironically, the Hawaiian League only actually had two members that were Hawaiian. This organization did not have any intention of helping out the Hawaiian Kingdom grow and it definitely did not care for the well being of the current queen or any of her citizens, if anything its intentions were to use the queens citizen as a way to blackmail her into surrendering. The Hawaiian League had severe lasting effects on Hawaii.

The Hawaiian League was arguably one of the biggest things leading to the overthrow of the Hawaiian kingdom, Although it wasn't the main reason for it, the Hawaiian League was one of the biggest factors.
