The way that the airport has been significantly renovated and is a very modern experience compared to the way the rest of the country, primarily the parts revolving around education have been taken care of is telling of the values of this country.

These values being on tourism and an economy that thrives based on the types of people that tourism brings. As well as benefits the Antiguans that are directly involved with tourism. Naming it after the Prime Minister of Antigua (at the time) emphasizes how integral tourism is to their way of life.

"In this place, the young librarians cannot find the things they want, and I don't know whether it is because of the chaos of storing for a long period of time the contents of a public library in cardboard boxes, or because of the bad post-colonial education the young librarians have received" (Kincaid 43). --- library, librarians, and people interested in coming to the library are not well equip to provide and receive resources (access to education/being able to read is part of this).

Conditions and Policies of Mill Reef Club

What becomes evident when researching the Mill Reef Club now is that it hasn't changed much from how it was described in "A Small Place." Despite the site's claims about being more inclusive, the prices still reflect that it's not a club for the average Antiguan, prices which you can't even see until you sign into the website with a membership. Additionally, when trying to research when Antiguans were allowed to join the club, no clear date came up, and one site claimed it was because the date was never officially documented which is an interesting move on the club's part. I think if anything this portrays that what is valued is the entertainment of tourists still to this day.

“It was built by some people from North America who wanted to live in Antigua and spend their holidays in Antigua but who seemed not to like Antiguans (black people) at all, for the Mill Reef Club declared itself completely private, and the only Antiguans (black people) allowed to go there were servants.”

“Antiguans thought that the people at the Mill Reef Club had such bad manners, like pigs; they were behaving in a bad way, There they were, strangers in someone else’s home, and then they refused to talk to their hosts or have anything human, anything intimate, to do with them”

These quotes demonstrate how the club is primarily for white, wealthy tourists and does not reflect or connect to the average Antiguan.

The hospital's condition seen in these images compared to the airport for example, shows what the government of Antigua sees as important compared to their people. They care more about tourism and money, rather than to create a safe and sterilized space for Antiguans. Kincaid even points out the mistrust towards the doctors from the people who live there, "Will you be comforted to know that the hospital is staffed with doctors that no actual Antiguans trust" (Kincaid, 7-8).

"You pass the hospital, the Holberton Hospital, and how wrong you are not to think about this, for though you are a tourist on your holiday, what if your heart should miss a few beats?" (pg. 7-8)

The hospital was in really horrible conditions for the people in Antigua. Something else that is interesting is that this hospital is on Queen Elizabeth's road, which can connect to the end of the book when the author was talking about the English influence on the layout of Antigua. It's also interesting that such a run-down hospital is on a road named after a queen.

The wait for access to the library

While the library offers many great resources now, the establishment of the new library was only 10 years ago when the Antiguans have been waiting for these resources for a long time (from the time of the book, ~30 years). It may take time to fully see the benefits of these resources on the new generation.

Although the mission statement of the Mill Reef Club may have changed their wording over the years, it is clear the values and requirements of the club are still the same from when it first opened. Ironically it does not seem the a diverse group is reflected in any of the images from the opening of Mill Reef Club to the current day.

There is the Holberton Hospital and several clinics. Though most of the clinics are in similar conditions. Though most of them have 1 each but resources for these clinics are unclear, such as treatments available.

"Will you be comforted to know that the hospital is staffed with doctors that no actual Antiguan trusts; that Antiguans always say about the doctors, "I don't want them near me"; that Antiguans refer to them not as doctors but as "the three men" (there are three of them); that when the Minister of Health himself doesn't feel well he takes the first plane to New York to see a real doctor; that if any one of the ministers in government needs medical care he flies to New York to get it?" (pg 8) If the government fears these hospitals and would not go to them, why would they expect the Antiguans to go to them?

They now have a Facebook page dedicated to the library. The page includes everything they have to offer as well as different events that they have throughout the year. This holds potential to help advance the librarys' state of being with the progress of updating and the growing popularity within the library.
