Heathcliff's whole revenge is based on the ownership of the two houses. Heathcliff always wanted to gain the 2 houses. Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange shared totally opposite characteristics--Wuthering Heights lacks hospitality but Thrushcross Grange represents refinement.

Nina

Discuss Nelly. Why does Bronte create her?
Emily Bronte has created Nelly so that there is a narrator. She can observe everything that has happened in Wuthering Heights and Thruchcross Grange, as a housekeeper. She was alive in the end of the story, which allows the readers and Mr. Lockwood to refer back into the past.

We discussed why is there so many violence in the novel. We see that scientists studying human physiology at the early industrial era is stupid and disregards many nature aspects of human being. This creates a suppressive social structure where everyone needs to hide their instincts. This "animal instinct" needed to be expressed somehow.

Heathcliff is generally a villain, being strong, rude, egoistic. However, he is probably justified in his actions, since his love for Catherine were never responded, he was considered an outsider at Wuthering Heights, and as he took his revenge, Catherine died. Despite Heathcliff's horrible actions, we can be certain that his love for Catherine was true and pure.

We discussed about marriage and types of love in the novel. Marriage in the novel is neither arranged nor because of genuine love. Catherine married Edgar as she thought it could enable her to give Heathcliff a better status, and Heathcliff married Isabella as he saw revenge from taking over Linton's wealth.
