I say this because both the Goddess's of the forest and the lake entities looked only at their reflection through Narcissus's perspective and could see their reflection and their beauty, but not Narcissus's. I chose these because the prologue is about the inspiration of Narcissus and the beauty he reflects, not by looks, but by the beauty/inspiration he gives. This global issue is what the prologue in my opinion, is really all about. For context, in the prologue The Alchemist beings telling the story of Narcissus and The River. In the story when Narcissus passes away; the River does not mourn his death because of his good looks, they instead mourn for the only way they used to look at their reflection. The story is very ironic because although they saw each other everyday neither of them understood how valuable to each other they were; not until Narcissus died. In the prologue, the alchemist picks up a book left by a passenger in the caravan in which he briefly comes up in the story of Narcissus. The beliefs and values of this story of Narcissus in the prologue go to show that the river was the form that Narcissus used and that shaped him into being someone that knows how to appreciate ones beauty. When he drowned, the river wept for the loss of whom the river was able to admire its own beauty. These values help shape the way we view ourselves because many times we aren't aware of who we are and what our worth is, through the eyes of others we are able to experience that moment or realization of our true beauty. Readers have also their own perspectives which they bring to their interaction with the text. The fact that there are a variety of perspectives impacts the interpretation of a text and therefore deserves critical attention and discussion.
I chose this global issue because in the prologue you can really see the two perspectives of the story, it shows how Narcissus was viewing his beauty. Once he fell in the story comes to the conclusion that the lake hadn't even recognized Narcissus because it was looking at its own reflection as well. The two perspectives of the prologue set the theme for the story.

Beliefs trust, faith, or confidence in someone or something.
 
I think culture and beliefs have a big effect on people. Like in the prologue the alchemist picks up a book and remembers a myth. The culture of the alchemist is that he has heard the story of the myth. If he was a part of a different culture or believed in something else, he might not have heard the story. Because of his culture he was able to remember the myth and was able to remember that it has a different ending.

Values-nurtured in particular societies and the ways they shape individuals, communities and educational systems. They might also explore the tensions that arise when there are conflicts of beliefs and values, and ethics. 
Both the lake and Narcissus valued themselves more than each other or the things around them, surrounded them. They admire their beauty, looks, being completely ignorant towards anything in front of them. The alchemist valued reading, he valued books and the meaning behind the words of which the book held. This is the reason for why he even picked up the book and began reading it in the first place.
