Greek Philosophy is the theory that reason rather than experience is the foundation of certainty in knowledge.Rationalists focused on argument, logic, and the questioning of received wisdom. It is said that rationalism could of have started because of the diversity and incoherence of mythology. It flourished around 600-300 B.C.E in Greece, later Greek rationalism was refined by philosophers in Arab-controlled lands while Europe was in the Middle Ages. As Europe entered the Renaissance period the Greek and Arabic texts formed the basis for modern rationalism.

Greek philosophers believed that the universe is put together in an organized way and is subject to absolute and unchanging laws. Philosophers claimed to have understood these laws through logic and reason instead of believing in an almighty god. They approached the big questions of life in a scientific or mystic way. Greek thinkers dared to question traditional conventions and to challenge the prejudices of their age, sometimes putting their own lives at stake.

During the Hellenistic era, Greek philosophers abandoned their political concerns and focused on problems of the individuals. They tried to come up with plans to improve society because their interest was how to be happy and virtuous. Greek rationalism did not spread farther than the Mediterranean Basin while it was under it's own rule. It wasn't until after the Romans took over their empire that Greek rationalism spread outside of the Mediterranean Basin.

Socrates (469-399 BCE) was an Athenian philosopher who constantly questioned the assumptions and logic of his students. He believed that absolute standards existed for truth and justice unlike the sophists. He encouraged Greeks and pushed them to question themselves and their moral character. His teachings were good for Athens because he forced them to think about their values and actions. Other famous philosophers were Plato and Aristotle. Plato was a student of Socrates, while Aristotle was a student of Plato. There were some similarities between most Greek philosophers, many took different approaches. Aristotle took a particularly materialist view of the world, while Plato believed reality to be a reflection of a greater truth. When he was 70, Socrates was accused of corrupting the youth and was forced to drink hemlock to end his life. He is also the chubby man as our wallpaper.

They were not true believers in the myths of the Greeks. They were atheists and were cynical about beliefs and religious and all traditions. Sophists believed and taught the "might is right." Protagoras, one of the most well known of the Sophists, questioned the existence of the traditional Greek gods and argued that there was no universal standard of truth.
