The Setting

Jack Worthing is Algernon's friend, Jack is very rich, he usually lives in the country, but he enjoys weekends in London. He is in love with Algernon's cousin, Miss Gwendolen Fairfax. But people often didn't marry for love in the 1890's. Young people had to have their parents' consent, and parents usually wanted their children to marry well, so money and family were more important than love.

First Rising Action

The first raising action is Jack Worthing wants to marry Gwendolen Fairfax (but using Earnest name to cover his real identity and making a story that Earnest is his brother who is so bad) and Gwendolen fall in love with him because of his name (Earnest). But her mother, Lady Augusta Bracknell didn't want her daughter to marry him because his name is not on the list that she wrote on her notebook, and then told Gwendolen to leave the house. But Gwendolen didn't listen to her mother and spoke to Earnest again, and ask for his address. Algernon heard and write his address because he heard that Jack has an aunt that so beautiful and Algernon wants to see her.

Second Raising Action

The second raising is Algernon went to Jack's house in country to met Cecily (Jack's aunt) but used the identity of Jack brother's and proposing Cecily and she told him that they're already engaged. Algernon is confused, because he just met her that day, and then she told him about the story of how they got engaged.

The climax is Cecily told Jack that his brother is in the house, but then meet Algernon, and then they fought. That's why Cecily and Gwendolen (in that house too) found out that they're engaged to the same person (name) and their fiance are used the same identity and its not their (Algernon and Jack) real name so they (the women) dont want to marry them (the men).
