Step One: Identify the Problem

The Boulder Beach penguins are overheating and have to go in the water more then usual to stay cool. They also have to go in the water to get food and they leave their eggs unattended. This causes the eggs to be stolen and killed by seagulls. How can I design and build a shelter that reduces heat transfer and keeps my ice cube penguin from melting.

For the trays demo plastic is a insulator and metal is a conductor.
The spoons demo I learned that the heat transfer in a metal spoon is more than a plastic spoon.
In the roof one Mylar reflects off heat and black roofs lets more heat in.
I learned in the attic that the heat doesn't just fade away instantly when you flip it over and won't heat up the same way it did as the other side.

For our design we stretched out the cotton into strips and taped them together as the floor. Next we made aluminum as the walls and taped those together so there is no holes. After that we taped Mylar to as the roof to Reflect the heat off.

Our successes in our design is the Mylar on the roof and our shape of our house because the Mylar reflects the heat of the house from the top and the shape of the house is small and not very big so its easier protection from the heat because you can add more layers to protect it and you won't run out of money. The Failures in our design might be the sides because it wasn't in our top three insulators because white foam was too expensive. Our percent lose for the penguin is 35% so far

We added more aluminum to the sides for better protection and taped pieces to the holes or openings of the house. We also added more Mylar to the roof to reflect the heat off of the house.

The second layer of Mylar on the roof improved the house as well as the second layer of aluminum for the walls of the house helped a bit as well.I think added a bit more cotton for the floor might have made the penguin survive more because the house would have more protection on the floor. Our percent loss for the final home was 28% loss. I might have the white foam as the walls because it was in our top three insulators and have more layers of cotton on the bottom.
