Our seminars take place at the Campfire.

You have until 11:10 am to finish the tasks.

Productive Struggle

This seminar, lead by Michelle, explored how we can establish experiences in the classroom. One example was a quickfire, which is a task you're given to work on or complete within a set of constraints. Our quickfire was tell your life story using only emojis and you only have 2 minutes. Research explains how "microfailures" can deepen student understanding and push students to look for patterns and connections to their previous experiences. Productive Struggle is a way to stretch all students and pushes them just outside of their comfort zone.

In this seminar, we talked about how to get collaboration started in our classrooms.

The main focus was answering the questions, "if you sit two students together, does this guarantee productive collaboration?"

According to research and a study done by Nick Nachowitz and Nancy Brummer, middle school students engaged in deeper conversations when given the vocabulary needed to have a collaborative conversation. They created sentence stems that gave students a framework to begin their conversations. This was the main takeaway from our seminar and this study and my other research on the topic can be found below.

Resources:

Fisher, D.
