This version of the photo inspired the idea for a small Ghost story taking place in a carpark. In the back of the photo it is clear that there is a building, and I even captured a few cars in the photo. Using these combined elements of the photo, I came up with my first potential idea for my creative work.

Unlike the first version of this photo, my mind didn't immediately go to some spooky ghost story. instead, it thought of a chase scene. whether the threat would be real or perceived, I'm not sure yet. But I know that with lighter aspects of the photo make me think of someone being chased through a carpark. These elements allowed me to come up with my second potential idea for my creative work.

This photo reminded me of a sort of horror story I had previously heard about. It was more or less a flight of stairs that once you entered, it was almost impossible to leave. I used this as inspiration for some free writing I set in second person, as if putting the reader into a simulation.

It gave me my fourth and fifth idea for a story. One being set in historical times, where buildings with this style were the common practice, or perhaps an abandoned old building haunted by ghosts of warriors from those days.

I used Perec's style of notetaking for this location.

• The lampposts shine, a blinding light if you look.

• The gravelly ground is rough, a crunch under my feet as I walk.

• i can hear the occasional chatter of nearby people, as well as watching them pass through. I counted 4 people over the time I was there.

• the building ahead stands tall, the lights inside flicking on or off once or twice. people likely going in and out of their room, or going to sleep.

• the carpark is peaceful, an empty town almost.

• one car had left between my entering and exiting the carpark - not may cars were there to begin with, only 3.

• the late night breeze is cool against my skin, despite my friend thinking it was cold.

For one of my experiments, I borrowed some noise cancelling headphones from my friend and decided to see how it would impact my other senses in regard to my environment.

My findings were as such:

• I focused on what I could see and feel more, as there weren't many things to taste or smell where I was sat. I found myself more aware of the wind, the feeling of the seat beneath me and the way my pen felt in my hands.

• I relied heavily on my sight to tell me what was happening around me and even took part in some imagining what people could be talking about based on their interactions with others. i noticed more smaller details, much like with Perec's work, however i didn't have to focus on sounds as well as sight.

My findings were as such:

• With a lack of visual cues, i was relying heavily on what i could hear to figure out what was going on around me. i wasnt able to hear a bike and turn to see where the bike was coming from, i had to make small guesses.

• Despite being sat the whole time, my mind wandered to imagining doing this experiment whilst walking, emanating the life of a blind person almost, which i didn't end up doing due to the risk posed to me if i walked blind for a few minutes.

• For me personally, i found it was harder to make out some things being said around me as people walked by, but small hums and ringing in my ears were very easy to recognise.

the idea of believing you've seen or heard something that isn't really there intrigues me when i come to see it in literature or movies. the idea of everything taking place in someone's mind while feeling completely real to them is a concept i wish to explore in my own ghost story work.

'The power of a ghost story lies in what is feared beneath the surface of the narrative, terrors glimpsed or imagined in the cracks, rather than what leaps out of the shadows.'

this idea is something i plan to use in my own works, such as my idea for Photo 3 where the main character is seen to almost be hearing things in the stairwell, but when trying to find the sources, it is almost impossible to do so.

The horror genre is believed to be originating in the 1890's, originating from folklore and religious beliefs. things such as vampires, werewolves and spirits were used to explain missing animals, sudden deaths and strange behaviour. however, one could say that the creatures and monsters we see in horror could date back many many years before. such as the salem witch trials in 1692. although the women weren't truly witches, the idea of witches was powerful enough and even continued into the modern horror genre today.

Psychological horror focuses on deeper aspects of life, revealing the psychological impact certain events like grief can have on a person and their life.

the inspiration for this came partially from a horror movie i watched recently called Gerald's Game, where the main character ends up suffering from hallucinations while fighting for her life.
