Santiago now becomes a man who is in touch with all elements and can interpret the language of the world. The treasure is more precious to him now because he worked so hard to get it.
I believe the characters Santiago met throughout his journey most deeply impacted his identity. The characters such as the woman from Tarifa and the king of Salem served as a catalyst for Santiago's journey. The woman from Tarifa also gave Santiago hope because someone else knew about the same treasure. The king of Salem inspired Santiago by making him invest a lot in the journey. With these new people in his life, Santiago is then influenced by their ways and his persona changes for the better by the end of the novel.
