On page 247, "The very next day, I landed a job at a hamburger joint on Fourteenth Street. After taxes and social security, I'd ne taking home over eighty dollars a week." She had matured really fast when moving to New York. She went from living with parents that didn't have a steady income to moving out there and starting a good life out there from the first day. She eventually landed a spot in Barnard college and a job with MSNBC and made tons of money. She really came of age, most of it was because of the motivation to grow up and not be like her parents.

Broken Promises

Page 210, "I need money to make money. I'll pay you back." This photo illustrates all the lies and broken promises Rex had told the kids. He borrowed money from Jeannette all the time and usually didn't pay them back, it was always spent on booze. If it was once or twice it would be okay, but it happened numerous times and Jeanette couldn't handle it. The promises he gave them, were always just little things. But he would always at the end say, "Have I ever let you down?" Which makes the children want to trust him.

Unconditional Love

Page 254, "But shes my mother." Lora had said, it shows that the family loves each other no matter what. Although she did end up kicking her out, she initially didn't want to because it her mom and she loves her. This proves the theme of unconditional love, because no matter what situation they still love each other. Even through the hard times and the kids realizing how bad their parents are, they still put so much trust in them. It would take something huge to break the love that family had for each other.

Forgiveness

Page 210, "That saturday, Dad told me that to pay me back, he had to earn the money first. He wanted to me to accompany him on business trip." She was furious at her dad after he had asked her for money. She knew that deep down the money would always be wasted, but she always ended up forgiving him. Even in the roughest situations the family always forgave each other, this also shows an example of unconditional love the family has for each other.

Fantasy Vs. Reality

Page 266, "Your father and I are pioneers." Rosemary had said this after explaining their living situation as being squatters. The parents had always raised them in a fantasy life, where everything they do is a big game and adventure. But in reality they were homeless quite a bit and never had a steady household or income. Even when the kids knew the reality, they still tried to play this game with their minds.

Page 237, "I was going to New York as soon as the school year was out." This picture and quote represent how Jeanette made a smart decision with her life by moving to New York. She had got into Barnard and nailed a job at MSNBC making tons of money. She had raised her self and got herself out of poverty. Jeannette had always had a sense of self discipline even when she was a little kid. She was able to cook for herself at the age of five and was super smart as child. The whole family knew she had something going for her.
