In "The Challenge", there is a Greek hero named Odysseus. He was the king of Ithaca in Western Greece. He was well-known for being an intellectual. His name means "trouble" in Greek, meaning he gave and received a lot of trouble in his life.

What Odysseus wanted was to marry Penelope. The way he would win her over was by stringing his bow and shooting an arrow through twelve axhandle sockets. He did this perfectly and was legendary because of it.

There was a very specific reason as to why Odysseus wanted to marry Penelope, and why he shot the arrow. He wanted to marry her because she was deemed the most beautiful woman in the world. He held what was almost like a contest to see who was the most beautiful woman in the world, and well-known women such as Athena and Aphrodite thought they would win. Penelope ended up winning the contest, along with Odysseus' heart.

The plan in this episode was for Odysseus to win the contest. The contest was to see which man in the town could shoot an arrow perfectly through twelve axhandle sockets. The man who won this contest also got to marry Penelope. Odysseus ended up performing this act perfectly, and everyone was shocked, and soon after married Penelope.

In the end, Odysseus ended up winning many things. He won the respect of many, this woman he wanted to marry, and the contest that seemed to be impossible. His life ended up very good, almost perfect. He was very proud of what he had done as well. There was a feast that was held and all was well.
<var>
</var>

Hero's Journey

The part of the hero's journey plot that this episode takes place in is Reward. The evidence proving this is when he states, "I did not miss, neither did I take all day stringing the bow" (Homer, 1037). This proves that this episode shows reward because Odysseus won the contest against all the other men, and therefore got to marry the woman he wanted. In the end, Odysseus got what he wanted in life, and there was a huge feast and most importantly happiness, which is the best reward you could get.

The reason why " The Odyssey" still matters today because it teaches us determination, hard work, and perseverance. It also teaches us that we can succeed while undergoing most dangerous and most challenging of tasks. Along with this, the Odyssey teaches people to push themselves to their limit and to believe no matter what happens. Nowadays, we also have the heroes like Odyssey, for example: Superman, Batman, Harry Potter and so on. They passed their own efforts to win the victory, that's the same as the Odyssey. He was to string Odysseus' old bow and shoot it through twelve axe heads.

Conflict

Conflict contributes to the overall theme of my episode very much. My theme statement is, "Always stand up for what you believe in, no matter how hard you have to fight." Conflict connects to this theme because if you stand up for what you believe in, there will always be someone who disagrees, which will stir up conflict. Conflict may be the main literary device used in the theme of this episode, because it is very relevant towards the subject.

There is a lot of characterization used in "The Challenge". For example, when Homer states, "The rest were waiting still in the quiver for the young men's turn to come"(Homer, 1036). This proves that every other man in the contest to win Penelope knew Odysseus was good at archery, and new he would beat them. This story, along with conflict, is very strong in characterization, and Odysseus is a very distinct person, perfect for this theme.

In "the Odyssey", Homer uses diction to express that this truly is "The challenge". "In the hushed hall" (Homer, 1036).reflects that the place where this story takes place. In this story, he uses diction to help describe by increasing the depth of the story.

In Homer's "The Challenge", figurative language is used to describe the theme. It says, " And Odysseus took his time, turning the bow, tapping it, every inch." (Homer, 1035).This lets the reader know that Odysseus tries to win the suitors. And also, In "The challenge", author use a lot imagery to describe the theme. “But the man skilled in all ways of contending, satisfied by the great bow's look and heft, like a musician, like a harper, when with quiet hand upon his instrument he draws between his thumb and forefinger" (Homer, 1035). This incarnate that Odysseus is win for the Penelope.
