I grew up in the Caribbean and schooling was much different then than it is now. At that time, I had no sense of fear/dread at school because the gates were closed after morning devotion assembly. In addition, there was an assumed stance that community members respected schools and facilitators and would not jeopardize students in any way. I can recall being happy and eager to go to school each day. I cannot recall much about inclusive culture because students revered authority and were instructed to simply follow rules for their own safety.

I believe a safe school is a place where students are happy and eager to come to for learning, play, and growth. Also, I believe community members, school offices, and municipal leaders has a fiduciary duty in keeping school compound safe. This include having a school nurse, youth psychologist, and law enforcer on the school grounds to deal with odd and off situations as they arise.

Overall, a safe school is a place where staff, families, and students work tirelessly to ensure safety and security for all.

I had my elementary school in Ghana. My school was very safe, there was a wall all around the school and a big gate. Once the school starts the gate is closed and there is a security guard no one can come in without going through security. I also did a bit of high school in Canada and it was different. I did not feel that I belonged in the school. Some of the teachers did not care about the students safety and i felt alone. Where back in Ghana my school was promoted an inclusive culture everyone is helping each other. My parents don't walk with me to school, i walk by myself or with a group of students in my community .

What makes school safe is where there is no harassment. A student knowing and feeling that they are welcome and belong in the school. No discrimination, respect for students and the staff in the school. Safe learning environments and involves , supporting students to demonstrate social emotional skills and no violence.

A safe school is where teachers and students are not distracted, disruptions are minimized, violence, drugs, bullying and fear are not present, students are not discriminated against. Where security guards or police are in the premises of the school.

Safe school is peaceful, using helpful words, working together, following procedures, positive words towards students and staff and getting along with others.
