Compare and Contrast Rochester to Salva’s home. At Salva’s old home, there was constantly war, it was really hot, it was difficult to get a hold of clean water, and difficult to find food. In Rochester, water is at super easy access. You could just go to the store or use a faucet. Also, you have access to an actual bathroom along with clean clothes and air conditioning.

Sudan: In Sudan there are dirt roads, always hot, dirty water, and people have to walk for hours to get to water.
Rochester: In Rochester there is only cement roads, in between hot and cold depending on the season, clean water, and you would have to walk less than a minute to get to water because most people have a water source in their homes.

In Sudan there are dirt roads, and in Rochester the roads are cement and paved. In Sudan there are huts, straw and clay, while in Rochester the houses are huge apartment buildings, made of stone and metal. In Sudan you will have to walk miles to find water and it would be dirty, in Rochester you can just turn a tap and get clean water. You will have to go to somewhere by foot in Sudan. In Rochester there are cars and buses, and planes.

In Southern Sudan, there was limited water sources and when they did find water, It was almost always dirty, muddy water. When it comes to where Salva has lived, and what places he has inhabited, there is a large difference between Rochester, New York, and Southern Sudan, in his village, Loun-Ariik. When Salva first arrived and landed in the United States in New York, he could instantly tell the differences in weather, from the blazing hot and dusty Sudanese weather to the frigid and cold American weather with additional snow that fell on the other side of the world. This temperature change also added a new shift in Salva's attire (from shorts and a loose shirt, to multiple layers of shirts, full-length pants, and a thick winter coat), which was new to him, since he wasn't used to the diverse weather and clothing type that is worn around and in different parts of the world. This is because he was used to one way of living and environment ever since he was born, (it was the lifestyle that he grew up with), which led him to believe that it would be the same when he gained the information that he was going to Rochester. This also led to his surprised and interested reaction when the plane landed. In addition, Salva saw the main difference in development (with vehicles and automobiles, such as the cars and airplanes that he rode when he arrived, etc.), and how America had paved roads compared to dirt roads, electricity, the speed and modeling of the cars that drove by, and the architecture and construction materials that could be seen in buildings and homes, schooling and education, etc. Finally, and most importantly, the fact that America had cool, clear, clean, and safe water without any impurities that could be drunk throughout the day, as well as a large food and nutritional supply that was diverse, healthy, and being imported from many parts around the world. These two key pieces were different in Southern Sudan, where dehydration and drinking water filled with mud and dirt which led to diseases and infections was common; as well as starvation, and the difficulties that came with finding this food and water which was far away from the villages in ponds (water), and areas populated with animals (food).

I think that Salva lives in an incredibly loving family. in the beginning of the book, we didn't get too much insight into his family life but, when we meet his father he is anything but rejoiced to see Salva. But even though Salva is an adult, his father needs to protect him, because Salva wants to return to Loun-Ariik. He wants to see his remaining siblings and his beloved mother. Although, Salva's father explains, "If you return to Loun-Ariik, they will try to draft you into the war." Salva's dad feels the need to protect Salva from the war because he loves him and doesn't want anything bad to happen to him now that Salva is leading a safe life. I do not think Salva should've ignored his fathers request, because if he did, Salva could never see them again period. Although Salva feels the need to see his family right away, It would be a much better idea to wait until it is completely safe.

There isn't one right answer for this question, because of the importance of water. For example in ALWTW the Dinka and Nuer tribes, these tribes fight over the lake water as we see at the beginning of the story. The tribes fight so much that Nya has to walk to another water hole to get water. This is an example of a way that water driving people apart. But, at the same time at the very end of ALWTW, the water well that Salva and his friends built for the village is bringing people together because everyone comes to the well to get the clean water. They collaborate to share the water among themselves. This is an example of water bringing people together. So water has the power to tear or bring people and communities together.

In my opinion, I think that salvas life in Rochester is much better than in Sudan. To start, he lives in a house, with a caring foster family, and has basic needs to live life. In Sudan he struggled with dirty water, a small shelter to sleep under. There are some cons about being in Rochester though. Some include being away from his real family, and friends back in Sudan.

Salva's life in Rochester compared to Sudan is a lot better. Even from the airport, all these new experiences are open. He has so many more opportunities and resources. And now he is living peacefully with his foster family. He even learned how to speak English. He has lost so much and gained so much. He spent most of his life scared and running. Everything in Rochester is new to him and doesn't really understand. But he now has a house, stable education, and all the things that he dreamed about when he was a little kid. He is happy, and he is excited about new beginnings. Even the weather is different he has to get used to wearing big coats, and even snow is new to him, back in Sudan all he would wear is shorts and now he has to get used to layering.

When Nya's father says cant you guess he means all the good things going on in the village such as the water system and the school which will be in her village now. This is a huge game changer for Nya because all those miles and days that she walked for water will not be needed anymore and she will have her own education. Akeer will also not be sick anymore because of the clean water in her village.

Salvas's life back home was really hard because he had to stay for days without water or food. life at rochster is a lot better, since the moment he was told he was going to go to america. everything in this new country is different but definitely better than back home. He might go trohugh some changes but it's defenetley better than wazlking for hours without water and food. The weather is different but he will get used to it.

One example of bringing people together is when Salva goes to a tribe of Nuer people, his tribe’s enemy, to bring them water and they are grateful to him even though he is a Dinka. It can also drive people apart though because at places like the lake camp the tribes fight each other for a bit of dirty, unhealthy water because it is vital for all of their survival.

I think water has the power to bring people together because at the end of the story, a lot of people came to get water from the new well. Also, even though Dinka and Nuer were enemies, Salva, a Dinka and whose Uncle was killed by Nuer, brought water to the Nuer people. Even though the Dinka were the first people Salva brought water to, the Nuer still made it to the “list” of places to dig wells. Even though water has the power to bring people together, I also think it could drive people apart, because when Salva was walking and suffering, they had barely any water. Even in the book, it described how some of the men didn’t want the woman giving water to the other, almost dead men, because then she wouldn’t have enough water for herself. (on page 55 & 56 in the book) That’s why I think water has the power to bring people together and drive people apart.

Salva’s life in South Sudan was really different compared to his life in New York. First off Salva rarely had electricity and now he has it everyday. In south Sudan they mostly have dirt road and little to none paved roads but in salva’s new life its swiched. Now salva hasnt seen a dirt road in a while. Salva also has water now and in his old home he doesnt.

I think that water does have the power to bring people together, or drive them apart because water is very important to us. It is something we need to survive. And, say that someone you know does not have water. And you share some with that person. Thats bringing people together. But, say there's this other person that you know, and they ask you for water, but you've gone a couple days without it. Then, you would start to fight with one another, and that drives people apart.
