I really like this model of the Project Assessment Tool as a means for students to collaboratively establish guidlines in a more user-friendly manner than a rubric. I also really like the concept of these being used as ongoing assessment and progress monitoring.

I have long been a proponent of short spurts of direct instruction and trying to do things in a "rule of 5's" or a "rule of 10s" where I teach for no more than 5 or 10 minutes and use slides with very few words, just big ideas. Making thing graphical for the students and using key words I have found is best. I also like the idea of only stepping in and coaching students when they are truly stuck.

I love the idea of identifying H.I.T's and umbrella questions. Although we are already doing this work in a lot of different areas, I feel like to teach the skills to students when they are younger will help foster inquiry among them.

I feel like this is an area that is so important but it is always a double edged sword. Certainly we can utilize ongoing assessment to help monitor progress, identify needs of our individual learners, etc., but at the end of the day students ability to "take a test" is still a real need for their futures. I always ponder how to balance the importance of the life skills of summative assessments vs. their real life value in learning.

I think I've gotten better over the years at promoting risk-taking. The shift happened when I stopped grading everything. I also already use high-impact take-aways, or enduring understandings and essential questions (in Understanding by Design language).

I struggle with wrapping the learning in inquiry and figuring out exactly which content kids need to know when. I tend to front load content or the project ends up being surface-level (not enough content).

In the beginning of the year, I feel like I have the patience to discuss, model and practice what it looks like to collaborate well and work together. I struggle with reinforcing this throughout the year. Once, I do it a few times, I'm ready to move on and be more content focused. I agree that it is necessary to practice and reinforce collaboration throughout the year, I'd just like to work on how to reinforce those concepts in different ways so the practice doesn't become stale and boring.

I found hack three to be the most helpful to my teaching. Content is usually my number one focus, so when I'm trying to plan out projects, I tend to cater it to the curriculum I already have in place, instead of reworking the curriculum to cater to project based learning. I liked how they organized the content around high impact takeaways
