Peer review initially was a very scary thing for me because I am extremely self-conscious of my writing and so to have someone read over my work and edit it critically was stressful. However, I got used to the idea after the first two and started to realize how helpful it can actually be. The person who reviewed my writing gave me constructive criticism that I could use to help strengthen and improve my work. The person was not only helpful but was also kind in the way they delivered criticism so I did not feel judged. I realized how incredibly useful it is to have another person review your work and get a new and fresh perspective. It allowed me to look at my paper from different angles and see where for example my arguments might have fallen or did not make sense. Unlike in the past, I found this style of peer-review to be the most helpful since I got constructive useful criticism I could apply to my paper and improve on it. It was definitely useful to have peer-reviewed with every draft as a form of aid along the writing process. Overall peer review was by far one of my favorite and most helpful parts of my writing process.

Not only having someone peer review my work was helpful but getting to review another person's work equally if not was more helpful. By editing and critiquing another person's essay I got to look at the prompt in a new perspective and apply that to the way I went about developing my paper. I was also able to see a lot of mistakes the person was making and compare it to my paper to see what I could improve in different areas. Reviewing another person's work really helped me to just see where I could also improve upon and strengthen my essay. It was a very reflective process in editing another person's paper then going back to my paper and having a new perspective on what I could do differently. Also going through another person's paper and comparing it to the elements of the prompt gave me a deeper understanding of what I may be missing or should add or even clarify.

Our class analysis of the differences between The Haunting of Hill House both the show and book as well as “The Black Cat” was extremely useful early on in the writing process. For me going over the elements of each piece and analyzing the themes and concepts that were present was a great start in the brainstorming process. It helped me to begin connecting all these important ideas and think about how they came together to generate a bigger message to the audience. For my paper specifically, I talked about the message Jackson was sending to women during this time which we addressed extensively in this overall analysis. It was also helpful to hear the point of view of my peers and how they viewed the stories themes and messages. Doing this helped me further question and develop the way I looked at all the pieces which intern strengthened the argument I laid out in my paper. It also gave me a wide variety of ideas I could use for my essay which started me on the path of thinking and developing my own argument. Most papers I have been asked to create up to this point have been basically summaries and with this paper asking us to develop a deep analysis in which we relayed an important message as well as developing an original idea connecting them both is a lot and having started the writing process in which as a class we broke everything down was extremely helpful.

The Goddu was a second source I read and analyzed prior to starting my paper, but did not use in my paper. Looking forward to the rest of the class I really want to read and understand all of the texts provided because I feel like they are useful in the process of developing and understanding ideas. The Goddu helped me early on in understanding The Haunting of Hill House and “The Black Cat” and given I read more of the second source I feel like my analysis would have been much stronger. Second sources are important in strengthening and supporting a paper and this is an area I really want to improve upon, so I want to make sure to read and understand more sources moving forward. The Goddu symbolizes something I want to improve on for the remainder of the class, but it also represents an important step in my writing process. It showed the development of ideas and all the work that went into the paper prior to sitting down and writing it. The source was also important in understanding the class as a whole as our main focus was on the wonderful genre of American Gothic.
