With music, there is a certain aspect of it that can cause the same piece of music to sound so different, yet played with the same notes. This case is similar to that of when the Grateful Dead play the song Darkstar. According to Ratliff, every time Darkstar is played, it sounds slightly different than the time before or the after. No rendition really sounds the same as one another. The Grateful Dead represent what I think Ratliff means when he talks about the "Endless Inventory" of music. Overtime, a particular artist or groups sound might start to differ from when the group or artist originally started performing. Pink Floyd, the classic psychedelic rock band from the United Kingdom is a prime example of this. When Pink Floyd first started out, their music was very dark, mysterious, and psychedelic sounding. This sound was very prevalent in their earlier albums- one of which is the Echoes album. This album was released very early on in their career as a group before the band started making the waves that they did in America. Later on with albums such as the Wall or even the Dark Side of the Moon have this psychedelic element to it but the music has switched from what it primarily what the group started out playing to sounding like the music of other British rock bands at the time such as the Who, and the Kinks while still retaining their own unique sound
