And for that, this folly befits not a king,

Gawain is acting nobly here by defending his king from something that could cause him potential harm. He wants his own life to be on the line rather than his uncle and kings life. 

And greets him good-humoredly, and gaily he says,

He comes to meet the man amid all the folk,

With bands of bright ermine embellished were both.

1935 That we framed to good effect amid fresh-filled cups.”

Since you took up this trade, if the terms were good.”

“By heaven,” said the host, "you have had some luck”’ (1935-1940)

Gawain breaks this part of the code because he dose not tell the lord of the castle of the green cloth that he received. He only gives him the kisses that he got from the lady. This goes against his deal that he made with the lord and serves dishonor onto his name. He is supposed to want death before he is ever dishonor which here he dose not.

That I have you for uncle is my only praise;

My body, but for your blood, is barren of worth;

And for that, this folly befits not a king,

And it is I that have asked it, it ought to be mine,

 And if my claim be not comely let all this court judge" (355-360)

Gawain shows honor to his king by offering to take his place as a tribute to doing as the Green knight asks. Since Arthur is the king and above Gawain, he is compelled to show him honor which in this instance he does. Also, he asks the king's permission before showing that he honors his king's command over him and would do nothing without his permission.

And kneeled down on their knees on the naked earth

To welcome this warrior as best they were able.” (817-820)

The servants of the castle are honoring Gawain because of the respect that he has earned. They are obedient because they respect his station as a knight. He does not force them to do anything but instead they do it out of respect for him.

With leave of her lord, he politely approached;

To the elder in homage he humbly bows;

The lovelier he salutes with a light embrace.

He claims a comely kiss, and courteously he speaks” (970-975)

Gawain shows the ladies of the lord's castle courtesy by being polite to them had bowed to them. To the younger lady Gawain gives her a hug and she gives him a kiss he is being polite throughout the interaction. To the older woman, he still shows her some courtesy in the form of a bow but nothing after that.

He had met with many mishaps and mortal harms.” (724-725)

He has just fought all of the creatures and monsters that were in the wood on the way to the lord's castle. He faces them bravely and never turns back because he is scared. This is one of the true tests of his manhood and his knightliness. One that he passes with flying colors.

Here Gawain has showed to the people of the castle that he is glorious and that he deserves recognition. He has just come from his journey and has fought many creatures on the way. There is no doubt that the people of the castle have heard of him and are giving him the recognition that he deserves for his glorious acts.

In this instance I took it as Gawain having the King as his charge that he feels compelled to protect at all cost. he does not want the king to fight and has vowed to protect him which is why he volunteers.

For I shall stand to the stroke and stir not an inch

Till your ax has hit home—on my honor I swear it!” (2285)

Here he is stoic in the way he accepts his fate and the blow that the knight is going to give him. This is chivalry at its core because he gave him his word and now he must honor it even if they are enemies.

“Why, thrash away, tyrant, I tire of your threats;

You make such a scene, you must frighten yourself.” (2300)

Gawain is taken over with anger at the fact that the knight missed him. His anger is blinding him from remaining calm and honoring his word. Also the knight has no intention of killing him but Gawain must still prove his honor.

The servants know and respect Gawain for his conquest on his journey. He carrys popular praise among the servants who see him as an equal to their lord.

For I shall stand to the stroke and stir not an inch

Till your ax has hit home—on my honor I swear it!” (2285-2287)

Gawain is making good on his promise that he made to the green knight that he would let him strike him down like he did to him. He sits and accepts his fate that he agreed to. This is very honorable of him to not only sit there but tell the green knight that he must strike him.

Withdrew the ax adroitly before it did damage.

Gawain gave no ground, nor glanced up aside,

But stood still as a stone, or else a stout stump

That is held in hard earth by a hundred roots." (2290-2295)

Gawain is showing a lot of courage here because he doesn't even flinch even when he is inches from death. This is a true test of bravery because he is about to get his head chopped off and yet he still does not care and takes it. This is also showing that he is fearless even in the face of death.

This is the badge of false faith that I was found in there,

And I must bear it on my body till I breathe my last." (2509-2510).

Gawain fails to show pride for what he accomplished in his quest to find the green knight. Even the whole court and the green knight thinks that he should be prideful. Yet Gawain still doubts himself for his one mistake of stealing he girdle. He has fought off monsters and showed honor and courage in the encounter with the green knight but refuses to believe that he should have any pride.
