He exemplifies the idea of self reliance for the reason that he doesn't cower away from the huge populations of mutants, a result from a recent man- made plague. He is a scientist who had stayed back in New York City to try and find a cure for the plague. He has remained in New York City even after the evacuation of the city, when everyone else has given up hope of finding a cure, and after the devastating loss of his wife and kid. This is quality of Neville, which is stated by Emerson when he states that individuals who express self-reliance should not be "pinched in a corner, not cowards fleeing a revolution," but men who are "redeemers and benefactors," and those who work towards the "Almighty effort,". Another quality of Neville that expresses self-reliance is his how he maintained his individuality and his goal and didn't give into the mounting pressure to give up hope like everyone he had known has done. Emerson says that, "Self Reliance is its aversion," and not its "conformity,".

A song that expresses self reliance is the song "Come As You Are" by the band Nirvana. This song emphasizes to the listener the importance of individuality and nonconformity. this goes hand-in-hand with what Emerson was expressing when he stated, "Self Reliance is its aversion" and not its conformity,". This agrees with Nirvana's message of you should be the person who you want to be and not conform or change because of your peers or the world around you. in the song "Come as You Are", the lyrics that complement Emerson's Self Reliance is "Come as you are, as you were," and " the choice is yours,". These lines in the song express that everyone has their own ideas and deserves a sense of individuality.

Another great figure that was misunderstood in history was Herbert Spencer. Spencer was a biologist who helped come up with the theory of evolution. He in fact talked about this theory before Darwin had made his scientific assumptions. he is the individual that coined the term survival of the fittest after reading one of Darwin's scientific journals. Many believed that he had followed Darwin's theory but in fact he had only incorporated this theory into his already existing theory.

Pathos- "Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string."
Emerson makes a pathetic appeal to the audiences by telling them to trust them self. He also explains that they are not alone and that everyone else is trying to achieve the same thing.

Logos- "Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton,"
Emerson made an appeal to the audiences logic by referencing to many great thinkers of the past that he believed possessed self reliance. This displays how Emerson believes that self reliance can make an individual great and accomplish great things.

Ethos- "Great men have always done so, and confided themselves childlike to the genius of their age, betraying their perception that the absolutely trustworthy was seated at their heart, working through their hands, predominating in all their being."
In this excerpt from the article, Emerson makes an appeal to the audiences ethics because he describes the importance of trustworthiness and that can dominate all their inner being. He also describes that this sort of confidence and self reliance that he is teaching about has allowed past people to become successful.
