It is often positive for catalase and nitrate reduction and is a facultative anaerobe that can grow without the need for oxygen. It is a common cause of skin infection abcesses, respiratory infections such as sinusitis and food poisioning. The treatment of choice for Staphylococcus aureus infection is penicillin. Some symptoms include boils, impetigo, cellulitis, scalded skin syndrome, nausea and vomiting, low blood pressure, blood poisioning, fever, rash, confusion, muscle aches, and pain. Preventions include washing hands and under the fingernails vigorously with soap and water before handling or preparing food. Do not prepare food if you have a nose or eye infection.
