I really like this quote and feel like it really describes INBs. Having a collection of your student's work in one notebook really is the best way to see what they know and how they use it. You can even start to see their growth over time by looking at what they could do at the beginning of the notebook and what goals they reached at the middle and end.

I connected with the part of the article that talked about behavior issues happening when students are not working. I know this all to well in my classroom and agree that keeping them busy with structured, appropriate work is helpful. The great thing about INBs is that they'll know what they need to do and how it should be done. They are able to be creative and have a say in their work which should hopefully keep them more in engaged.

I used something similar to an INB in the beginning of the year where I had my kids cutting out things and gluing them into their reading notebooks. I felt that they really understood the lessons I was teaching by doing this but it did take forever to hand out, cut, and glue multiple things into their notebooks. To be honest, I even kept some of these lessons for days when I knew I would have a sub because it would keep them busy!
