Homeless Man

This photo is of a man walking down train tracks alone. He is carrying many items on his back and looks as if he is homeless. We have no clue where he is going or why he is going there. The tracks in the picture are placed going from bottom left to top right making the tracks look long and unending. This relates to the book and the train scene because the boy and his father are walking down the road until they find a broken train. In the book, the journey the father and son are on seems unending just like the train tracks in this photograph. Also, the homeless man seems exhausted which is very similar to the father and son in the book.

Train Window

Although not the greatest photograph, this picture from a train window works very well with the train scene. In the scene, it is described that the boy looked through the silted glass to see the train track disappear in the weeds. . In the photograph it appears taken through the window of the train and the track also seems to disappear off the image and into the weeds. This is different than the picture of the homeless man where the tracks seem to go on forever. Also, the picture is dark and sky is grey creating in the eery mood like the book had.

This is a beautiful painting of a man and woman, probably husband and wife traveling on a train during a normal day. This is an experience that the world will never see again and an experience that the little boy has never experienced. The little boy has probably never been on a train and will never be able to sit with his wife on a train. Life before was so calm and you could relax and read a newspaper on a train, but now people are fighting to survive and fighting for simple human needs.

This is a drawing of a train conductor hat, a lock and a lamp that train conductors normally used. The gold plate on the conductor hat stands out greatly against the dark hat and grey background. Just like the gold plate, this scene in the book is some light in mostly darkness. When the little boy is sitting in the engineer seat, he is playing the role of the conductor without even knowing it. The father makes train noises to make it seem more real for the boy, but soon realizes the boy does not even know what a train sounds like.

This photograph is a beautiful image of two train tracks that are next to each other until they disappear into the fog. The photographer placed the tracks at the bottom and had them move towards the center of the screen. These two tracks are like the boy and his father who travel together up until the very end. Similarly to the book, the photograph has a forest and an extreme lack of civilization. Also like the book, the mood of the picture is very grim because of the grey sky and dark brown tint on the photo.
