They might have been able to tell by the actions of the animals and the shock the day before the Aleppo quake that killed millions.  In 1138 they did not have the technology or education to be able to identify certain types of disasters, but they should have learnt from the first disaster what could be done to prepare for the next possible earthquake. A group of people could have gotten together and started what we call today a "management responses" group. Many lives have been saved due to the technology we have today. We are able to predict natural disasters and notify people in advance so people can evacuate and be prepared for the events upcoming. Back in 1138, they were not able to foresee the natural disasters upcoming. These plates are moving in the same direction but at different speeds, this is called a transform type of movement. The Arabian plate is moving 1.9cm/y and the African plate is moving 0.6cm/y. The Arabian plate is moving 1.3cm/y more than the Africa plate.
