Kolbe knew that this man had a family and that he wanted to be able to see them again. Kolbe, being a single man, knew he had no wife or children to care for, so he made the sacrifice for someone else so that they could live. Jesus did this, but on a much larger scale. Jesus died on the cross to save all of humanity from their sinfulness.
