A timeline of events and the cause and effect relationship between them.
Students will create a bank of major events from the book and place them in chronological order. The book has three time periods it references: 19th century Latvia, 19th century Green Lake, Texas, and the present time in Camp Green Lake, Texas. Students will identify causes seen in past events that lead to the present times effects.

Students will explore wildlife native to desert ecosystems and how the food chain and biodiversity differs from the area that they live in. They will identify the relationships between organisms seen in the book (ex: the humans, the yellow spotted lizards, scorpions, rattlesnakes, and even the oak trees and onions.) Students will then create and draw a food web map based on these organisms and fill in plants in the food web from research on what other organisms are native to the Texas desert.

Students will research the necessary tools and materials they would need with them to survive a weekend "camping" at Camp Green Lake. They will have a budget and will have to design their own packing list from a lit of items and their corresponding prices to remain under budget. The list below has some suggested prices as well as a suggested budget of $100. All of the items and scenarios specific to the book Holes will be made on little cards and students have to pull from their camp pack inventory of cards to respond to dangerous scenarios.
