Hour 3: Is Lennie dangerous based off his actions in Weed? by Naomi Williams

Directions: In your groups you will be assigned a quote from the scene where George explains to Slim the events that took place in Weed (pages 38-42).
Provide a topic sentence which includes your TAG and claim. Add in any context needed before the quote to understand what is happening in the scene and who is speaking. Signal tag, quote, and cite the evidence. Then, build in your elaboration. Think: how does this support the claim? What does this prove? Cause/effect? (Because _________, then ________) Compare/contrast? (If ______ had not happened, then ______). End with a transition and concluding sentence.

In the novel, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, Lennie is perceived throughout the city of Weed to be a dangerous human. In the text, Lennie and George are travelling through Weed looking to find a job when all of the sudden, Lennie "'reaches out to feel this red dress an' the girl lets out a squawk, and that gets him all mixed up, and he holds on 'cause that's the only thing he think to do'" (41). Because of this particular incident, Lennie proves to be a dangerous character, especially because if he wasn't dangerous, he wouldn't come across to women in this way and most definitely wouldn't hold on to the dress tighter, or even grab the dress at all. Overall, Lennie has made decisions that prove that Lennie is in fact a danger to society.

In the novel Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, Lennie is not a dangerous person. Because of Lennie's mental disability, he is misunderstood in his actions. As George explains in the book what happened at Weed, he says, "'So he reaches out to feel this red dress an' the girl lets out a squawk, and that gets him all mixed up, and he holds on 'cause that's the only thing he think to do'" (41). This shows that Lennie has no bad intentions, and he only wants to feel the material of the dress. This is misperceived as him trying to rape the woman, because he doesn't know how to properly act due to his mental disability. Therefore, Lennie is not dangerous and he only means well, and would never hurt a fly.

In the novel, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, Lennie poses a threat to the people around him. When describing the events that took place in Weed, George says, "So he reaches out to feel this red dress an' the girl lets out a squawk, and that gets him all mixed up, and he holds on 'cause that's the only thing he think to do" (Steinbeck 41). Because he holds on to the dress, even though she is screaming and fighting, he proves that even though his intentions might be innocent, his actions caused panic and harm. This makes him dangerous, no matter his intention, because he caused harm to the girl, whether it was emotional or physical. Because he caused harm, he poses a threat to the people he interacts with.

In the novel, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, the character Lennie has a dangerous demeanor. When Lennie and George are working a job in Weed, Lennie encounters a woman who has a red dress on. Lennie can't help but touch it, and the woman squawks. Lennie then takes a hold of her and refuses to let go. She starts to yell. When George was retelling the story in the bunkhouse, he said, "'That girl rabbits in an' tells the law she been raped'" (42). Lennie is a dangerous person because he grabbed the woman and would not let go despite her screaming. He can not keep his emotions in check and doesn't think through his actions before he does them. Because Lennie attacked the woman and wouldn't let go, she went and told the cops that he raped her. Lennie and George then had to flee Weed and find a job elsewhere. In conclusion, we can concur that Lennie is a danger to society because of his behavior in Weed.

In the novel, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, Lennie is not a danger to society. When George and Lennie first arrive at their new job, George explains to Candy, a swamper, why they had to leave Weed, their old home. He explains how Lennie wanted to feel a woman's dress and is misunderstood. George explains, "'Lennie's so scared that all he can think to do is just hold on'" (41). The woman wrongfully attracted attention towards this situation even though Lennie didn't hurt her. Because of Lennie's anxiety and lack of common sense, he does not have good self awareness like most other people his age. Therefore, Lennie is not a danger but rather misunderstood.

In the novel, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, Lennie could be a danger to society. While George was sharing his past in Weed with Slim, Slim asked if Lennie ever hurt the girl. George replied, "'Hell, no. He just scared her. I'd be scared too if he grabbed me. But he never hurt her'" (Steinbeck 42). Because of Lennie's disregard for social awareness and large masculine figure, people can be intimidated by him and see him as dangerous, especially the small, fragile girl when he grabbed her dress. Lennie may not have the intentions to scare or hurt anyone, but he still has the ability to be perceived as dangerous to himself and others around him.

Lennie encounters a women with a dress Lennie finds soft/ fluffy therefor he wants to "pet" it. The author writes "He was so scairt he couldn't let go of that dress. And he's so God damn strong, you know"(41). This quote by the author shows that Lennie went on to touch the women's dress and didn't let go which led to Lennie being accused of rape. All in all, it shows that Lennie is a danger to those around him.

In the literary masterpiece, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, Lennie is proven to be a danger to society. In the bunkhouse Slim and George start talking about Lennie's mental handicap. They bring up the topic of George and Lennie's past work in Weed. Then Lennie walked into the room and was carrying a puppy. George instructs him to put it back and he obeys immediately. Slim states that he doesn't believe Lennie to be mean. George responds by stating, "'Course he ain't, and he'll do any damn thing I---'" (43). Because Lennie will do anything that anyone tells him, he may end up doing something that poses a threat to society. This is reinforced by the boss asking Lennie what he can do, George states,"' He can do anything you tell him'" (22). If someone were to have told him that it was okay to do what he did in Weed, then he would've listened to them because he does not have a sense of boundaries. The combination of his mental handicap and his physical strength may end up leading to harm or danger to those around him.

In the novel Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, Lennie is not dangerous because he simply didn't understand that what he did would scare the girl in Weed. When Lennie was alone with the girl he noticed how soft her dress was and wished to touch it. George explains the event, "'That girl rabbits in an' tells the law she been raped'" (42). George elaborates by saying Lennie is naturally intimidating but would never hurt someone. The soft texture calms him and he finds it comforting. He didn't mean to upset or hurt the girl in Weed. Lennie is afraid of loud noises, when the girl screamed it made him hold onto the dress tighter, which caused a misunderstanding between the girl and Lennie, who simply wanted to touch her soft dress. Lennies intimidating exterior simply frighted the girl, and he didn't have the social skills to explain himself.

George responds by saying, "' 'Course he ain't, and he'll do any damn thing I---'" (43). Because Lennie will do anything he is told, then he doesn't question if the commands are good. He will just do it without thinking about the morality of it or how it will affect other people. If Lennie were to think things through, then he wouldn't be dangerous because he knows what is wrong and doesn't just listen to other's commands. Clearly, this shows how Lennie is dangerous because he will listen to anyone's commands without thinking them through.

"He was so scared he couldn't let go of that dress. And he's so God damn strong, you know" (Steinbeck 41). Through Lennie's actions it was blinded by emotion, which wasn't purposeful, but even so, did still cause them to have to flee. Lennie doesn't know how to control his actions based on his emotions and those actions can effect the people around him negativity.

When they were in Weed, Lennie saw a woman, and due to his impulsive personality, he grabbed her dress. In the bunkhouse, George explains to Slim, "Lennie's so scared that all he can think to do is jus' hold on" (Steinbeck 42). This proves that Lennie is not capable of thinking of his decisions in advance, rendering him as a threat. He has extreme strength, making him able to accidentally hurt people and animals if this combined with his poor decisions. Lennie is unable to control his strength and actions, meaning at any time he could harm anything around him.
