However, as MGLVA develops SBG, we have been instructed to put process and product both in the gradebook and to accept the highest score as the overall learning target grade. That seems odd to me bc a formative assessment is a) being scored in the gradebook and b) able to hold the overall grade in the category.

My understanding of process and product is the same as yours. I think we are okay there. Regarding the grade book, I understand that all the scores are eligible to go into the grade book. Each of the formative and summative assessments can be included in the overall grade for the standard. Formative assessments should be a part of the learning process to achieve the perfect product. So, if a student does not achieve a 4 on the whole standard, they should still be given credit for the formative pieces they understand. That will give the student a picture of the whole standard and its parts. If we do not include some or all of the formative pieces, I believe we are saying all or nothing. (That is my belief, not a belief of MGLVA.) That defeats the purpose of the SBG. I know that Lindsey, Andrea, and I will be offering PDs, but I know you want an understanding now. Formative assessments that are part of the standard and contributing to the grade should be in the grade book. Participation type formative assessments do not need to go into the grade book. For example, warmups and exit tickets. They are missing, partially completed, and completed. These process items are not graded because the product is what matters more.
