This semester I am requesting that my grade for English remains the same, an A. I believe I deserve an A in English because I have worked very hard on all of my assignments and always turned in my best work. This grade reflects not only my grades on assignments but also my growth in reading, speaking, and writing. I want my teacher to understand that I truly believe that I learned a lot this year and will continue to use the skills I have gained in this class throughout my schooling.

Argumentative Writing

Out of all the writing I have done this year I am by far most proud of my argumentative essay. I feel this way because I felt as if I saw a big improvement in my writing by the end of this assignment. I also got to write and argue for something I am passionate about. I have felt as if for the past four years my writing has stayed remotely the same with little improvements however during this assignment I felt a huge shift. I started using more strategies to appeal to my audience and used more elements such as ethos, logos, and pathos. Some feedback I received on this essay was to include more pathos in my writing. I completely understood this as I struggled implementing this when I was in the writing process. With that and our next assignment being a debate I knew I would have to get better at using pathos. During my debate I made sure to include more pathos and even found personal stories. Not only did I learn about ethos, logos, and pathos, I also learned about adjusting your writing to your audience. I used this in my writing by including articles and quotes that would prove to adults why kids need freedom of speech and shouldn't be censored from valuable information. I feel as if my grade reflected my writing very well.

Throughout this year I didn't participate much in class discussions or sharing out however I think things such as my debate and my book club podcast showed my speaking and listening skills. I believe my public speaking skills have improved a lot this year. I went from not participating at all and feeling uncomfortable or nervous to participating a little more and feeling more comfortable when I speak. One way I can prove this is because my group in both my debate and my podcast had received compliments from Ms. Grefe. I overall feel a lot better about my public speaking especially after my debate. I was able to talk about a serious topic while using all the evidence we found, talk in a time limit, and in front of people my age.

Reading Scores

This year I read a couple different genres all of which I enjoyed. I read mostly romance books but I also read a few mystery/thrillers. I would say none of these books were much of a challenge for me however I would get bored with the slow beginnings to most of these books. My favorite books I read this year were, "Everything, Everything," "The Hate You Give," and "We Were Liars." The book I struggled with the most was a book I didn't finish, "Little White Lies." This book had an interesting story line however it was very long and I started it second semester when we stopped our in class reading. This is one reason why I think my reading habits have changed during this year. During my first semester reading in class and setting a reading goal made me read consistently and kept me on track. I felt most engaged in my reading that semester and least engaged this semester. I think my reading level also shows that when I was reading more my level was where it needed to be but when I stopped reading my score went down. I then had to retake the star test and try really hard to get my reading level back to where it needed to be. Even though my reading scores were not a constant growth I am very proud of my final score as I feel as if I have finally grown in this area.

Some of my most consistent goals as of earlier this year were maintaining my GPA, going to bed earlier, and keeping up with getting my drivers license. While I didn't keep up on all my goals I did on the ones I found most important. I have maintained my GPA this whole second semester, got better sleep, and got my drivers license. During class I didn't participate that much however I would share my thoughts when called on in class or when I got something out of it. For example I would share my weekend plans or what I did over the weekend and I answered a question in order for my debate team to get extra credit. If I got any feedback on an assignment I wouldn't stress over it, I would use it to my advantage and implement it into my next assignment. I would say my teacher and classmates would say that I have a positive attitude and a good work ethic.

Counter Argument and Reflection

Looking over all my graded assignments I feel as if all of them showed my real effort and ability. I want my teacher to know that every time I turned in an assignment it was the very best I could do. One area of struggle was during the early stages of our debate. Our group was missing a member for a while and we were all very confused on what we were supposed to do. However, we got over these setbacks by the end of the debate and overall had a good discussion. My overall growth throughout this year should outweigh any weak spots because although it may not be perfect it is still growth. This year was full of growth and I believe my writing reading, speaking, and listening all got better. This is why I think I should deserve to maintain my grade of an A.

Overall, I think it is fair that I am requesting an A because over the year I have shown growth in all areas in this class. I also have worked very hard on all assignments as I make sure to turn in my best work. One thing I want my teacher and or future teachers to remember about me as a learner is my work ethic, as I complete all my assignments on time and efficiently. I plan on continuing my growth next year by learning and applying new skills, making sure to keep an open mind and being able to implement feedback.
