         <description><![CDATA[<p>The Vietnam War (1955-1975)</p><p><br></p><p>The Vietnam War was a conflict between the Northern Vietnamese communist guerrillas and the Southern Vietnamese capitalist government. The United States got heavily involved through military aid and personnel. The conflict resulted in a communist victory in Vietnam and a major blunder for the United States' military capabilities and prestige.</p><p><br></p><p>The Vietnam War was important to the Cold War since it was one of the biggest attempts by the United States to contain communism in the Cold War. In addition, it proved that the United States military was not invisible and also helped to perpetuate anti-war movements and ideas across the world.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The Creation of the People's Republic of China (October 1, 1949)</p><p><br/></p><p>The creation of the People's Republic of China (PRC) was the creation of the communist government in China under Mao Zedong. </p><p><br/></p><p>The creation of the PRC was important to the Cold War since it led to one of the major powers in Asia to turn into a communist power, leading to the loss of one of the United States' greatest allies and causing a major ideological shift in the region. The creation of the PRC also led to an ideological alliance between the Soviet Union and China, resulting in greater cooperation and support for communism across the globe. This revolution and change in ideology caused many governments and revolutions to also occur across Asia, such as in Vietnam. </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The Korean War (June 25, 1950 - July 27, 1953)</p><p><br></p><p>The Korean War was a conflict between the communist North Korea and the capitalist South Korea. This conflict also involved the United Nations supporting the South Korean government and the Soviet Union and China supporting the North Korean government. The conflict resulted in a stalemate for both sides, with borders barely changing.</p><p><br></p><p>The Korean War was important to the Cold War since it was the first major conflict that the superpowers in the Cold War, the United States and the Soviet Union, went against each other and supported opposing sides in a proxy war. The Korean War was also important to the Cold War because it showed how wars would be fought in the present and the future, with military support but no direct conflict between major powers occurring.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Cuban Missile Crisis (October 16, 1962 - October 29, 1962)</p><p><br/></p><p>The Cuban Missile Crisis was a confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union over missile placements in Cuba. Due to the United States putting nuclear missiles in Turkey and Italy, the Soviet Union put missiles in the communist nation of Cuba. This placement resulted in a blockade of Cuba, resulting in nuclear war almost occurring. Due to negotiations from both sides, the missiles were relocated from these regions and decreased tensions greatly.</p><p><br/></p><p>The Cuban Missile Crisis was important to the Cold War since it was the closet moment that the United States and the Soviet Union engaged in nuclear conflict. Following the crisis, the tensions between both superpowers began to calm down and increased cooperation between both nations.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The Creation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (April 4, 1949)</p><p><br/></p><p>The creation of NATO was an alliance between the United States, Canada and several Western European countries, such as Britain and France, to allow for the defense and collective security against belligerent states, especially the Soviet Union. It was / is a defensive treaty, meaning an attack on one means an attack on all.</p><p><br/></p><p>The creation of NATO was important to the Cold War since it provided a counter balance to Soviet aggression in Europe and prevented the spread of communism within Europe. It also brought about greater military cooperation between Western European states and the United States. Additionally, it expanded the geopolitical influence that the United States had in the Cold War. </p>]]></description>

The alliance was served as a way for the Soviet Union to protect its satellite states, like Poland and Czechoslovakia, from possible invasions from NATO as well as control these satellite states even more.</p><p><br/></p><p>The creation of the Warsaw Pact was important to the Cold War since it was a way for the Soviet Union to counter NATO, the alliance created by the United States. In addition, it helped to strengthen the Soviet Union's ability to control its satellite states within Eastern Europe. In addition, it served as the driving ideological antithesis of the Soviet Union and its communist ideology against the capitalist United States.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The Berlin Wall (1961-1989)</p><p><br/></p><p>The Berlin Wall was the creation of a wall between West Berlin and East Berlin to prevent East Germans and other people from Eastern Europe from escaping to Western Europe as well as to isolate and separate West Berlin from East Berlin.</p><p><br/></p><p>The Berlin Wall was important to the Cold War since it symbolized the oppression and authoritarian governments of the satellite states in Eastern Europe as well as the Soviet Union itself. The wall was made to keep the East Germans from escaping to Western Europe, limiting the ability of people to escape the oppression faced there. In addition, the fall of the Berlin Wall symbolized the end of the Cold War. With the fall of the Berlin Wall, the division that the wall had brought had come to an end. In addition, after the fall of the wall, Germany reunited and the fall of the communist regimes began to occur in the Eastern European countries.</p>]]></description>

The invading forces were forced to pull out of the invasion due to pressures from the international community, especially the United States and the Soviet Union.</p><p><br></p><p>The Suez Crisis was important to the Cold War since it was the final nail in the coffin for Britain and France's superpower status due to the fact that they were forced to pull out of the invasion by other great powers. In addition, the Suez Crisis showed that there were new global superpowers, which were the United States and the Soviet Union.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The Dissolution of the Soviet Union (December 26, 1991)</p><p><br></p><p>The dissolution of the Soviet Union was the complete collapse of the Soviet Union into multiple different states, such as Ukraine and Belarus. This dissolution was caused due to economic stagnation and the political instability facing the Soviet Union throughout the 1970s and 1980s.</p><p><br></p><p>This event was important to the Cold War and the 20th century because it signaled the end of the Cold War. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Cold War ended with a victory for the United States. In addition, with the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the only global superpower that was left was the United States. With the fall of the Soviet Union, the United States could expand its influence and alliances, with NATO expanding into Eastern Europe in the following years and decades. </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The Hungarian Revolution (October 23, 1956 to November 11)</p><p><br/></p><p>The Hungarian Revolution was an uprising against the Soviet Union's occupation of Hungary. The Hungarian protests and anti-Soviet government were brutally put down by the Soviet Union, resulting in the continued occupation of Hungary. </p><p><br/></p><p>The Hungarian Revolution was important to the Cold War because it exposed the cracks and possible instability within the Warsaw Pact. The Hungarian Revolution showed that the Soviet Union's control over Hungary and the rest of the Warsaw Pact was much weaker than it appeared to be. This revolution also influenced other revolutions to occur in the Warsaw Pact, such as the Czechoslovakian Revolution in 1968. Additionally, it also resulted in greater tensions between NATO and the Warsaw Pact. Since the uprising was brutally put down, the Western nations and journalists were appalled by the actions committed against the Hungarians.</p>]]></description>

The United Nations would attempt to achieve multiple different goals with the help of the nations in the organization, such as achieving world peace, increase cooperation between countries and help to solve economic and humanitarian problems in the world.</p><p><br></p><p>The creation of the United Nations was important to the Cold War because it helped to resolve conflicts around the globe, such as the Suez Crisis. Peacekeepers from the United Nations would help to maintain stability in peace in regions across the globe. In addition, the United Nations helped to maintain international cooperation between the United States and the Soviet Union throughout the course of the Cold War. With the help of the United Nations, the United States and the Soviet Union managed to avoid all out war due to the open diplomacy that could be achieved at the United Nations.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The First Nuclear Test - Trinity (July 16, 1945)</p><p><br></p><p>The first nuclear test involved the United States deploying and successfully testing the first nuclear bomb in history. This test was conducted by the United States military in order to see if the bombs would work and could be used on Japan.</p><p><br></p><p>The first nuclear test was important to the Cold War since it started a new age in human history, the atomic age. With this successful test, it opened up a new way for humanity to fight potential wars. It also drove governments to actively prevent global wars from occurring between nations because of the power of the nuclear bomb. In addition, this event was the driving factor at the start of the Arms Race between the United States and the Soviet Union, which was the buildup of nuclear stockpiles by both nations.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Potsdam Conference (July 17 to August 2, 1945)</p><p><br></p><p>The Potsdam Conference was a conference between the United States, the United Kingdom, France and the Soviet Union to decide the fate of Germany. This conference would involve the complete disarmament and demilitarization of Germany as well as dividing Germany into four separate occupied zones.</p><p><br></p><p>The Potsdam Conference was important to the Cold War since it ultimately resulted in the division of Germany into two separate countries, one that was capitalist and one that was communist. This division of Germany helped to drive conflict between the superpowers, with West Germany allying with the Western powers and East Germany siding with the Soviet Union. Additionally, the division of Germany showed the massive ideological differences between the superpowers. As well as that, the division of Germany resulted in tensions to arise throughout the Cold War, such as with the Berlin Blockade and the Berlin Wall.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The First Soviet Nuclear Test (August 29, 1949)</p><p><br></p><p>The first Soviet nuclear test was the first successful nuclear test by the Soviet Union. Due to the United States' monopoly on nuclear weapons at the start of the Cold War, the Soviet Union decided to make and deploy its own. </p><p><br></p><p>This was important to the Cold War because it helped to drive the nuclear arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union. It also resulted in greater tensions occurring between the Soviet Union and the United States since they both had these powerful weapons. Additionally, it helped to drive the fear of nuclear war and total annihilation between people and governments.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The Launch of Sputnik (October 4, 1957)</p><p><br></p><p>The launch of Sputnik was the first successful launch of an artificial satellite in human history. The satellite was relatively simplistic, with it only transmitting radio signals back to Earth. The satellite was launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome and crashed back to Earth three months after its launch date. </p><p><br></p><p>The importance of Sputnik to the Cold War was that it marked the start of the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union.  The competition between these nations for more advanced space technology had started because of this successful launch, ultimately leading to people being sent into space, such as Yuri Gagarin, and the eventual landing on the moon. In addition, the launch of Sputnik helped to increase Cold War tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union. With the launch of the satellite, people in the United States began to fear the Soviets even more because of the technology they thought they had. This led to the United States building up its military stockpiles as well as its missiles in order to combat the Soviets more effectively.</p>]]></description>
