What is Repetition?

The concept of repetition, according to Ratliff in his book “Every Song Ever,” is repeating certain elements of a musical piece in an artistic way. He describes how a car alarm is repetition but in an unpleasant and unintentional way. Reputation paired with dynamics and growth in a piece equals a great song, and I agree with Ratliff about that.

James Brown’s song “”Ain’t it Funky Now” exemplifies the concept of reputation in music in a very obvious way. It almost is the central theme of the song, however, Brown isn’t repeating the same words over and over again. He switches the message up every time, but keeps the way he says it the same so it feels like true repetition.

The song Super Star by Korean artist G-Dragon shows repetition when he repeats the same phrase “I need somebody” throughout the song, mainly the chorus but also in the background of the verses. The repetition of this phrase really intensifies the meaning of the song. Even if you don’t understand what GD is saying, that phrase explains what the whole song is about.

"Repetition is a little more about music itself, and thus a little more about humankind alone."
