Advantages of Android

Hello there, hope you are having a good day, my name is Norman and for today I am going to talk about a battle which has been going on since the early 2010; which serves more advantages? iPhone or Android?

This debate on the notion is not a peculiar amongst gadget enthusiast, they will discuss almost everything from its build to the system that the company implemented.

Before we begin, let me first introduce to you our contender; iPhone is a smartphone line by a prestigious company 'Apple' that embodied a closed source operating system named iOS. Android on the other hand is not a smartphone but rather an operating system developed by Google. Company such as Sony, Vivo, Oppo, MI, Huawei and Asus apply Android in their product.

From the name, it is more like a smartphone versus an operating system but that is not the case. So how do we contest them? Well, in the recent year of 2018, Samsung and Apple released their flagship; iPhone XS Max and Samsung Galaxy Note 9. I will put them side by side and go through all the specification and from there, I am going to choose who will be crowned the champion.

Designwise, most of the Android smartphone will have a volume and power button on the side and three 'on-screen' button at the very bottom of the screen to give a full viewing experience. Since different smartphone comes in different bezels, its up to the consumer's choice but the way Apple designed their smartphone in their headquaters located in California, United States of America is way different than most of the smartphone, it was so different and eccentric that some company actually did copied their design. One of it will be the screen notch at the middle top of the screen of iPhone X series. Most of the reviewers and users hated the notch as it does not give the visual satisfaction while playing games or watching videos. Galaxy Note 9 does have an edge display, meaning the screen are stretched to the sides of the smartphone. Besides, Galaxy Note 9 has a higher resolution compared to iPhone XS Max. The weight difference in both of them are just seven grams; 208g for iPhone XS Max, 201g for Galaxy Note 9. The main reason why iPhone XS Max comes in a bit heavier it is because the body is stainless steel frame compared to aluminium frame body for the Galaxy Note 9. Also, front and back 'normal' glass for iPhone XS Max compared to 'Corning Gorilla Glass 5' front and back for the Galaxy Note 9, making it more lighter and scratch-ressistant. Luckily both of them are IP68 dust/waterproof.

iPhone XS Max does come with increased number in network band. More network band equals in more network reception and internet roaming overseas should not be a problem for iPhone XS Max. However, the Galaxy Note 9 have less of them but the download speed is higher than the iPhone XS Max; a difference of 50Mbps (150 Mbps and 200 Mbps). In terms of sim card slot, both of them can support dual sim. Its hard to decide who won here but for me, I'm not travelling a lot and i could really make use of the download speed of the Galaxy Note 9, making it the winner in my opinion

Apple iPhone XS Max comes with a pre-installed iOS 12, Apple A12 Bionic chipset with a hexa-core processor, quad-core Apple GPU (Graphic Processing Unit), with no external memory slot but only comes with 64/256/512 GB (depends on the price range) internal slot with a dissapointing amount of 4GB RAM (Random Access Memory). The Galaxy Note 9 already has an Android version 8.1, Exynos 9810 octa-core chipset with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, four extra cores compared to A12 Bionic chipset. It also comes with a large amount of octa-core Andreno 630 of GPU which makes it a better choice for high graphic gaming, with lesser core, iPhone XS Max might ended up overheating through high graphic gaming. It can also support micro SD external memory up to 512GB and also has a huge amount of RAM which is 6GB or 8GB (pricing differs). Internal memory for the Galaxy Note 9 comes in 128GB for 6GB RAM model and 512GB for 8GB RAM model.

Camera, one of the pinnacle rules when buying a smartphone is; if it goes hot, it better shot. Surprisingly enough, both of these products have 12 megapixel camera planted on their backside; except iPhone XS Max looking lot more like a traffic light, but the flash is better as it comes with a quad LED dual tone real flash while Galaxy Note 9 only comes with an plain LED flash. Front camera is a bit tricky, although the Galaxy Note 9 comes with a 8 megapixels camera but it does not support 60 fps (only up to 30 fps) video recording at higher resolution of 1440p while the iPhone has a slightly less; 7 megapixels but it does support 60fps video recording at less resolution which is 1080p.

'Face ID' was phenomenal when they released the iPhone X, their fans love it so much that they still feature it with their latest iPhone XS Max. Samsung stepped up to the competition by making the 'Face Recognition' in their Galaxy S9 and still have it in their Galaxy Note 9. The idea of unlocking your smartphone with your face or entertain yourself and others with 'Animoji' is actually loved by people around the world. In addition, Samsung add something more interesting to their Galaxy Note 9 which is an iris scanner, a barometer and it could rate your heartbeat per minute!

While both of them support fast-charging, battery endurance was put to the test. iPhone XS Max does not stood up to its 'Max' name, Asus ZenFone Max has a battery capacity up to 5000mAh and could be used as a powerbank for those in need while the iPhone XS Max only has 2658mAh battery capacity with the endurance rating of 76 hours in total. The Galaxy Note 9 easily beat iPhone XS Max with a 4000mAh battery and an endurance rating of 97 hours.

In a nutshell, The real reason why people have Android as their companion is the marketing price. While we go through all the specifications, it was obvious that the Samsung flagship, the Galaxy Note 9 could represent the Android community to fight with the Apple iPhone flagship, the iPhone XS Max. By winning the battle and debate, you would think that the Galaxy Note 9 stands at a higher selling price compared to the iPhone XS Max. Well, think again, the Standard Retailed Price (SRP) for the iPhone XS Max is RM 5,399 for 64GB model while the Galaxy Note 9 is RM 4,399 for the 512GB model. A total difference of RM 1,000!. That is a lot of earnings to be wasted for a less RAM, less battery capacity, less feature, with a disturbing black screen notch, heavier in weight, less downloading speed and lack of external memory support. Even other brand's flagship such as OnePlus 6, Sony Xperia XZ Premium and Asus ZenFone 6 performs better than the Apple iPhone's flagship. If u could afford extra RM 1,000 for iPhone XS Max forte in camera rather than the Galaxy Note 9, then just go for it.

How to use your android smartphone?

The first thing we'll take a look at is the Home Screen, which is the screen you see when you are not inside an app. There's a lot of interesting stuff packed into this one screen, and there's a lot you can do with it to make yourself more productive using your Samsung Galaxy or your Google Nexus or whichever Android device you own.
The Notification Center. The very top of the Home Screen is actually telling you quite a bit about what is going on with your smartphone or tablet. On the right side, it displays information like how many bars you are getting with your carrier or your Wi-Fi connection, how much battery life you have left and the current time. The left side of this bar is letting you know what type of notifications you have.

For example, if you see the Gmail icon, you have new mail messages. A battery icon might indicate a low battery. You can read the full notifications by holding your finger down on this bar, which displays a quick view of your notifications, and then swiping down with your finger, which reveals the full notifications.

You can add live widgets that receive constant updates on weather, RSS feeds, and Facebook or Twitter updates. You can also bookmark your favorite contacts directly on the home screen so you can dial them with just a tap. Next is, android phones sync better with Google services like Gmail, Google Maps, and Google Calendar. You also get the best features from those services before iPhone users. After that, many android phones let you replace the battery. That's good because batteries degrade over time. Lastly, a lot of android phones let you add an SD card for extra storage.

When iPhone was first launched back in 2007, it never came with instruction manual on how to use your phone like we use to see in Nokia and Samsung phones. Because apple always have focused on simplicity so much that they got their users speak for them about it.

Apple iPhones are extremely powerful yet easy to use. I was a Nokia loyalist prior switching to apple. There was never a single year when my brand new Nokia was started lagging terribly. The last Nokia I had was an experimental Nokia N9 with MeeGo OS. It did the same thing, started lagging and I had to replace it.

In Dec 2013, I got iPhone 5s. Right 2 months after release. I still have it, Its been Almost 3 years and 6 months. Apart form a worn out battery which is obvious, The phone has absolutely zero problems. I have dropped it several times played graphic intense games like real racing and GTA san andreas etc for hours. But that champ still goes on without any problems. This was the only reason I bought a MacBook pro and shifted to apple ecosystem.

If you think about it, cost of owning an apple device (cost of ownership)is pretty cheap as compared to buying out new phones every year or two.

I never had a device which runs the same as its brand new after 3 years of heavy usage. That is why I switched to iPhone and apple ecosystem.

How to use phone android effectively ?
Android is the most popular mobile operating system in the world. While Apple phones receive much attention, Android holds roughly 88 per cent of the global market share.
Android’s settings
Get to know the settings menu, because this is how you will achieve maximum control over your device. There are two ways to access Android’s settings: you can either open the app tray and tap the “Settings” shortcut (not to be confused with the “Google Settings” shortcut, which is different), or you can pull down the “Quick Settings” panel and choose the cog icon in the upper right corner

While the Quick Settings menu allows you to toggle oft-used settings like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, you’ll find much more granular controls in the main Settings menu. This is the heart and soul of doing more with your Android device.

The Settings menu is broken down into several easy-to-follow sections on most devices, with Samsung’s most recent offerings being the exception to the rule–where stock Android (and many others) use subsections to break down this menu, Samsung tosses everything into one long list. It’s also worth mentioning that some manufacturers – LG comes to mind – will break the Settings menu down into tabs. In all honesty, it makes no sense to do it this way – good thing there’s a way to fix that.

Managing your Apps

In the Settings menu, under the “Apps” section (or “Applications > Application Manager” on Samsung devices), you can find a list of everything that’s installed on your handset. Tapping on an application name will provide a list of useful information: how much storage it uses, how much data it has used since a certain date, any permissions it has been given, notification access, default settings, and how much battery it has used. On Nougat – the most recent version of Android – you can also see how much RAM is being used by the app, as well as where it was installed from (the Google Play Store or if it was “side loaded”).

If you want to uninstall an app, you can also do that here by tapping the big “Uninstall” button. You can also Force Stop an application if it’s misbehaving, though you shouldn’t have to do this very often.

Storage

Your phone has a certain amount of storage for apps, games, photos, videos, music, and other files. If you’re running out of space, the storage settings are an excellent place to determine what is taking up that space, and how much you can reclaim by removing applications and deleting stuff you don’t need. You’d be surprised how much space you get back this way.

Battery

Battery life, or lack thereof, is a huge impasse to our cord-cutting desires. The battery settings give you an overview of how much battery you’ve used, how much longer it’ll last, and which apps are draining the most battery. You can also adjust Andriod’s “Battery Saver” setting here.

Location

Many of your apps, such as “Camera” and “Facebook,” use your location for certain features. This can lead to high battery use, and some people prefer to not give their location away to apps they don’t trust. You can adjust your location settings from this section. Generally, we recommend leaving the main setting on and set to “High Accuracy”, but you can tap any app on this page to revoke its access to your location.

Security

There are a great many ways to protect your device and data on Android, and this subsection of where you’ll find the majority of those options. You’ll find the security section on “Lock screen and security” on Samsung devices.

Backup and reset

Backing up your stuff is pretty important on any computer you use, but it’s even more important on your phone. Aside from the everyday disasters that can befall it, it’s also really easy to lose – in the back of taxi cabs, in toilets, or even to common thieves. Using your device’s backup abilities effectively can save you a lot of awful heartache.

How iPhone changed the world?

1. Changed the world of cell phone handsets

When Apple shipped the iPhone in 2007, its radical design and incredible popularity caused not a ripple, but a tidal wave of change throughout the mobile phone handset industry. One reporter covering Spain’s Mobile World Congress in 2009 wrote that “the name on everyone’s lips was Apple, despite the Californian company playing no part in the show…. it’s little wonder that many of the devices and services unveiled in Barcelona owe more than a little to the trail blazed by the iPhone.”
Specifically, the iPhone prompted handset makers to abandon physical keyboards in favor of all-screen input and make thinner phones with much better screens capable of multi-touch input.

2. Changed the world of software distribution

A casual observer might be forgiven for believing that Apple invented the App Store, or even cell phone apps. But cell phone app stores and apps had been around for years before Apple showed up.

But before the iPhone, installing phone apps was relatively complicated and problematic. You had to find a good store online, download the app to a desktop computer and follow the unique and often complicated directions for installation to the phone, which happened through the sync process. Each app maker had to be paid using PayPal or credit card. Uninstalling apps was rarely straightforward.

The iPhone App Store made all this obsolete. Apple iPhone forced users to set up an iTunes account with current credit card and password. To get software, users just find the app in the App Store, press “Install,” enter a password and watch the icon status bar for evidence that the install was complete.

The iPhone radically improved the processing for discovering, installing, paying for and uninstalling software. The process was so seamless and easy that it forced Apple-style App Stores on smart phone competitors and even desktop-software makers like Microsoft.

3. Mainstreamed “jailbreaking”

Apple’s granting of national carrier monopolies in the first couple of years, as well as strong control and censorship of apps, legitimized the practice of jailbreaking — the opening up of an iOS device to remove limitations imposed by Apple.

Users jailbreak their iPhones to use them with non-approved carriers, install non-approved software and to enable capabilities that locked phones can’t do.

The iPhone’s popularity and long list of limitations made “jailbreaking” a household word, and the practice of jailbreaking widespread and accepted, even among novice users.

4. Unified music and phones

Everybody had been talking about integrating music player functionality into phones for years, but it didn’t catch on among the majority of smart phone users until the iPhone. Apple even made an iTunes mobile application for other handset makers like Motorola to pre-install on phones. But most people didn’t bother. After the iPhone, music on phones became standard for most people.

5. Made the world safe for software keyboards

Before the iPhone, the idea of using an on-screen keyboard on a phone or tablet seemed unimaginable. The biggest initial complaint with the iPhone itself was about the screen-based keyboard. Rather than giving users what they were screaming for, which was an add-on, peripheral or third-party range of physical keyboards, Apple deliberately made sure they were unavailable. If you wanted to use an iPhone, you had to use an on-screen keyboard.

Apple dragged the user community kicking and screaming into the future of keyboards. After a couple of years, everybody got used to the idea. When Apple shipped the iPad, with its much bigger version, it seemed like a luxury. And ten years from now, when most computing is done with an on-screen touch keyboard, historians will remember that the iPhone made it possible by forcing the user community to overcome their resistance to the idea of an on-screen keyboard.

6. Addicted the world to motion and orientation sensors

Apple’s accelerometer in the original iPhone was something of an exotic novelty to many users. The current model has accelerometer, gyroscope and compass, which thousands of app designers rely on to create really amazing effects. Some apps, like games, can use these sensors to create all kinds of illusions and innovative effects. Others, like Instapaper, use them for simple input (to scroll text).

Thanks to the iPhone, these sensors are now simply expected by both developers and users.

7. Killed the stylus as a mainstream input device

It’s hard to imagine now, but before the iPhone, most smart phones has little pens for writing and pushing on-screen buttons. They were clunky, inelegant and easy to lose. And they still exist. But after the iPhone’s elegant touch screen, styli on phones have been relegated to the periphery.

8. Opened the door for PC-to-Mac Switchers

The PC-Mac wars have been raging since 1984. People tend to choose sides and stick with them. Apple, which had one-digit desktop PC market share for most of its history, has always sought ways to get users to switch to Macintosh. Apple launched a famous TV ad campaign staring John Hodgman as “PC” and Justin Long as “Mac” with the explicit message that PC users should switch to Mac.

In the past five years, Apple has in fact made enormous gains in market share, thanks mainly to the iPod and the iPhone. These devices served as a kind of “gateway drug” for PC users to discover the larger world of Apple products.

The vast majority of both iPod and iPhone users were and are Windows users. These devices gradually introduce PC users to Apple’s way of doing things. They get people into Apple stores. The constant iTunes updates bring people to the Apple web site. Eventually, some PC users make the switch, but not after being softened by one of Apple’s mobile devices.

9. Shattered the myth that Japanese consumers only buy Japanese phones

The fourth largest handset market in the world is gadget-crazy Japan. Before the iPhone, it was common knowledge that only Japanese companies could succeed in that market. Nokia spent a fortune trying to succeed in Japan, only to reach the 2 percent market share mark before essentially giving up and going away.

But by 2009, just a year and a half after Nokia left in defeat, Apple had acquired an astonishing 72 percent of Japan’s smart phone market. It turns out Japanese consumers will buy foreign phones — if they’re cool enough.

10. All but killed the mobile gaming market

Before the iPhone App Store came along, mobile gaming meant dedicated pocket gaming systems from companies like Nintendo and Sony. Now, the mobile games market is rising to new heights, and most of the growth is thanks to the iPhone. The stand-alone systems are no longer growing, as gamers and developers increasingly gravitate to the iPhone, and to a lesser extent, the Android platform. Some in the industry even speculate that dedicated handheld gaming systems are on their way out.

When Nokia made a play for a handset that combined cell phone functionality with mobile gaming in their 2003 N-Gage gadget, a few experts thought the convergence of phone and gaming had arrived. They were wrong. The phone was buggy, over-priced, clunky and ultimately rejected by users.

It wasn’t until the iPhone that cell phone gaming really took off.

11. Accidentally brought the world’s attention to the plight of Chinese factory workers

A recurring problem of abuse and suicides at some Foxconn factories where iPhones are manufactured has made the horrible conditions at many Chinese factories common knowledge. While the iPhone factors are far safer and more humane than most, the idea that the warm-and-fuzzy iPhone you carry in your pocket may have been made by a worker driven to suicide has made the issue very real for millions of people, and has driven improvements in conditions in throughout China.

12. Launched the touch revolution

Computer scientists and user interface researchers have been working on touch computing for decades. And a decade from now, most computing will no doubt happen on touch screens.

It was the iPhone that brought the touch screen into mainstream acceptance and use.

The Apple iPhone may be the most influential consumer gadget ever, changing the way phones work, changing the way people see the world and changing human culture. Not bad for just four years.

When the iPhone was released?

The history of iPhone began with a request from Apple inc. CEO Steve Jobs to the company's engineers, asking them to investigate the use of touchscreen devices and tablet computers (which later came to fruition with the iPad). Many have noted the device's similarities to Apple's previous touch-screen portable device, the Newton MessagePad. Like the Newton, the iPhone is nearly all screen. Its form factor is credited to Apple's Chief Design Officer, Jonathan Ive.
</sup>

In April 2003, at the "All Things Digital" executive conference, Jobs expressed his belief that tablet PCs and traditional PDAs were not good choices as high-demand markets for Apple to enter, despite receiving many requests for Apple to create another PDA. He believed that cell phones were going to become important devices for portable information access, and that mobile phones needed to have excellent synchronization software. At that time, instead of focusing on a follow-up to their Newton PDA, Jobs had Apple focus on the iPod. Jobs also had Apple develop the iTunes software, which can be used to synchronize content with iPod devices. iTunes was released in January 2001.On September 7, 2005, Apple and Motorola released the ROKR E1, the first mobile phone to use iTunes. Jobs was unhappy with the ROKR, feeling that having to compromise with a non-Apple designer (Motorola) prevented Apple from designing the phone they wanted to make. In September 2006, Apple discontinued support for the ROKR, and released a version of iTunes that included references to an as-yet unknown mobile phone that could display pictures and video.

On January 9, 2007, Steve Jobs announced iPhone at the Macworld convention, receiving substantial media attention. Jobs announced that the first iPhone would be released later that year. On June 29, 2007, the first iPhone was released.

On June 11, 2007, Apple announced at the Apple's Worldwide Develepors Conference that the iPhone would support third-party applications using the Safari engine. Third parties would be able to create Web 2.0 applications, which users could access via the internet. Such applications appeared even before the release of the iPhone; the first of these, called OneTrip, was a program meant to keep track of users' shopping lists. On June 29, 2007, Apple released version 7.3 of iTunes to coincide with the release of iPhone. This release contains support for iPhone service activation and syncing.

According to The Wall Street Jurnal, the iPhone is manufactured in the Shenzhen factory of the Taiwanese company Hon Hai (also known as Foxconn). Also, according to recent news, Apple will shortly begin outsourcing the manufacturing of iPhones.

What Is Not Good About The iPhone

1. If you don't want to pay for a data plan, the iPhone has no option for that. A data plan will cost you about twenty dollars a month. You need a data plan for the iPhone to be able to communicate over the Internet.

2. It is very inefficient to make a simple phone call with the iPhone, particularly if you don't have a person in your contacts list. You can dial a phone number that you know much more quickly with a keypad that has real, physical buttons.

3. On the iPhone touch typing for texting and email is very slow as compared to a regular keyboard; this has been somewhat mitigated by Braille apps, of which there are now two. However, you should know that research has shown that, on average, a blind person entering data using the touch-screen QWERTY keyboard is writing at about three words per minute. By contrast, users of the built-in Braille apps have been clocked at around 23 words per minute.

4. The iPhone is very much a technology requiring good hand-ear coordination. People who want real buttons that they can operate silently by touch will be very disappointed in the iPhone.

5. Battery life for the iPhone is still an issue. You have to charge it at least once a day—a lot more if you use GPS.
