Smart watches are allowed to be worn for time-telling purposes only, and must be kept in school/airplane mode during the school day. Please remind your child they are not to be recording/sending/receiving messages or calls during the school day. During testing sessions throughout the school year, smart watches must be removed and stored in backpacks. The first day of band and orchestra for students who played last year is Friday September 22.
Here is the schedule:

When you go to band PLEASE remember to bring 3 pencils and your music stand.

If any students got a new instrument over the summer, please see Mr. Cheston and Mr. Jones.

First year band/ orchestra students

The first day of band/ orchestra for first year band students is Tuesday, September 26th.

1. The students will go to the cafeteria for orientation at 2:40. Every student should bring a pencil and their instrument. You DO NOT NEED the folding music stand and other supplied like Sound Innovations music book.

2. When students get to school in the morning they need to drop off their instrument in the band room. (Through the double doors in the gym)

On Tuesday, October 3, the students will bring their instruments and all other supplies on the checklist. This will be the first day the students play!

Important Information *PLEASE READ*
-Students should wear costumes to school (No changing in bathrooms allowed)
-Masks = allowed
-Weapons = not allowed
-The parade will start at 2:00. Parents are welcome to join! The parade will be on the blacktop. UNLESS it rains. If it rains, parents can come into the gym to watch the parade. (Please sign in outside of the gym doors)

Spelling Bee Information!

students will take a written test on words they have NOT studied
the 10 or so spellers with the top scores in each grade will be invited to move on to the grade level spelling bee
those 10 or so students invited to the grade level bee will get a list to study and will be asked to stand and spell words in front of an audience where a winner and runner up will be declared. The school bees will be held in January.
the top 2 spellers in grade 5 will be given additional word lists to study for the county bee that will take place in March at Hood College in front of larger audience
all students are welcome to participate in the screener bee, but should only participate if they are interested in continuing on with the spelling bee

Tomorrow Oct. 31st is our Fall party! The parade will begin at 2pm. Parking is limited. Please allow enough time for you to park and get to the back blacktop before 2pm to ensure seeing the entire parade. As a reminder if the weather is bad, our parade will be in the cafeteria. As another reminder, students are to wear costumes to school or wear clothes they can put their costume over. There will be no changing in the bathrooms before the party.

From Monday Nov 13th through Thursday Nov 16th, Girl Scout Troop 37105 (4th graders) will be running a food drive for the Middletown Food Bank.

There will be a box in each classroom and the troop will count the number of items donated throughout that week. The winning class will earn a popsicle party! Students: Look for posters coming up this week. The girls will be on the morning announcements each day next week with reminders as well!

Report Card Envelopes (Term 1)

Term 1 Report Cards will be distributed today, November 8. Students who took the Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) exams in the 2022-23 school year will receive their Individual Score Report (ISR). The MCAP scores provide important information for students, families and school staff about a child's readiness for next steps in their learning journey.

Spelling Bee Update!

On Monday, November 13th, Jackie and Betty will be meeting with the Spelling Bee contestants in Art II for distribution of materials. Students should come at the same times as before:

3rd - 10:30 to 11:10

4th - 12:10 to 12:50

5th - 12:50 to 1:30

This should be the last full meeting until the first week in January when there will be a last minute Reminder/Q&A session before the actual Spelling Bees. In case you have not seen the Spelling Bee dates they are:

3rd - Mon. January 8th at 4pm (Snow date - Jan. 23rd)

4th - Tues. January 9th at 4pm (Snow date - Jan. 24th)

5th - Wed. January 10th at 4pm (Snow date - Jan. 25th)

History Bee Screening!

On Thursday, Jan 25th the history bee screening test will be held in Mrs. Young’s room following this schedule:

3rd grade - 10:30 to 11:10

4th grade - 12:10 to 12:50

5th grade - 12:50 to 1:30

Aaround 3 students from each grade will be selected to be on the History Bee team. The team will meet for practices one or two times a week. The practices may happen before or after school and possibly during lunch and/or recess. There will be lots of reading and studying at home as well.

The History Bee will be held in May at Hood College.

Valentines Day Celebration!

We are having our class Valentines party on February 15th from 1:45-3:15.

We are asking parents, if able, to donate money towards crafts and snacks that the school will purchase for each classroom party. This can be done by clicking the link (Also sent to your email). We would like to have all donations by February 2nd.

We also need 2 or 3 volunteers to help with the party. If you are interested please email your classroom teacher ASAP and your name will be added to the classroom lottery. We will choose helpers on February 2nd. You will be notified by the teacher if you are selected, and the teacher will provide more details about your duties for the party.

Attached you will also find a class list. Please make sure if you are doing Valentines that there is no food attached, as this is a school wide policy. However, non-food items may be attached. Also, if your child is making Valentines, they should make one for everyone in their class.

We will be providing Valentine's bags and will be decorating them the day of the party.

Thanks for your willingness to volunteer and donate to make these parties successful!

Science / Social Studies Fair

FCPS is holding their elementary science and social studies fairs on March 23rd at Tuscarora High School! This is a great opportunity to learn and explore a topic that interests your child! It could be about something they learned in school or something totally new! Even projects started in class can be used or expanded upon. The possibilities are endless! We hope to see many Knights representing Middletown Elementary!
