Grades K-2

1. Featherless/Desplumado by Juan Felipe Herrera 2004. Grades 1–4.

Summary- A young man, Tomasito, has spina bifida and uses a wheelchair to get around. He just transferred to a new school and is having trouble getting adjusted. As a “pick-me-up”, his father brings a new pet that is featherless to him. The bird is named Desplumado. At first Tomasito does not want anything to do with the bird but once he gets a place on the soccer team he sees there is “more than one way to fly.”

2. Moses Goes to a Concert by Isaac Millman 1998. Grades K–3.

Summary- Moses takes a field trip to a music concert and finds out along with him and his classmates the percussionist his deaf as well.

3. All Kinds of Friends, Even Green! by Ellen B. Senisi  2002. Grades K–3.

Summary- Moses, who is in first grade, is assigned an essay to write. Considering everyone, Moses choice is an iguana who is missing her back toes.

                                                                                                  Grades 3-4

1.Good Night, Commander by Ahmad Akbarpour Grades 3–6.

Summary- A young child who has sadly lost his leg is right in the middle of a war in the home town. Being by himself, as he has lost his mother, he is faced against the enemy but surprised the enemy is young just like himself and has also experienced loss. 

2. My Three Best Friends and Me, Zulay by Cari Best 2015. Grades 1-up 

Summary- Zulay is in first grade with her three best friends. Even though Zulay is blind, she and her friends all enjoy the same things. When field day arrives, Zulay surprises everyone by choosing the activity race. Even though Zulay needed an aide, with the support of her teacher and friends she was successful at finishing the race.

3. Ray Charles by Sharon Bell Mathis Ages 5-10

Summary- A biography of the blind jazz player, Ray Charles, who taught himself how to read and write music through Braille. With his determination, it shows anything is possible despite his disability.  

                                                                                                  Grades 5-6

1.     Adam and the Magic Marble by Adam and Carol Buehrens. 1991. Grades 5-6.

Summary- Adam, Chris, and Matt are often harassed by bullies until they discover a magic marble. This story depicts Tourette Syndrome and Cerebral Palsy

2.     Here’s What I Mean to Say… by Sarah Yates. 1997.

Summary- Ann, who has cerebral palsy, takes readers through her struggles with everyday activities. This book defines Cerebral Palsy.

 

3.     How Dyslexic Benny Became a Star: A Story of Hope for Dyslexic Children and Their Parents by Joe Griffith. 1998.

Summary- Benny, who has dyslexia, struggles while his fifth-grade classmates’ skills improve. He is suddenly terrified when he is called upon by his teacher to read aloud. This book helps explain Dyslexia
