Over the last year, I have solicited A LOT of feedback from mentors. I recently was given unsolicited feedback from a former manager about how proud they were that I had gone from being resistant to being enthusiastic about getting feedback. It made me realize, in part, that a lot of happiness in my job was when I got over myself and started leveraging the valuable perspectives of others. 🙂

As a facilitator, I found myself wanting to fill the awkward pauses after asking a question (especially in Zoom) with my own remarks. I received the feedback to lean into the awkward silence to help allow time for people to think and respond to the questions. ALSO learned to better setup people for success by prepping them that a question will be asked earlier.

As a teacher, one thing I learned about halfway through my career is if I wnated to know how I was doing, I had to ask. Not just my admins (they are literally never in the classroom) but my students. Kids gave great feedback--positive, negative, and constructive. It was hard to ask them sometimes, especially "those" classes where I knew it would be rough, but it was really helpful and helped my relationship with the kids as they respected that I asked them. I also had to ask my peers--sometimes I'd invite them to come watch me teach or look over a lesson or whatever. Feedback wasn't just freely given, it had to be sought and that has helped me after transitioning because I realize the importance of asking. (And kids taught me not to take it toooo personally either!)

In my previous job, we were commonly tasked with training the new hires, and from experience and hearing feedback from colleagues, I learned that I cannot make assumptions about where people's skills are. So I made a habit to ask very specifically about their previous experiences and their familiarity with the tools we used. A lot of times people would feel embarrassed to say they didn't know something, so I would share that when I started that job I had no idea what an LMS was. That would generally make the new hires open to share what their gaps were.
