My greatest takeaway in reading through the resources was learning that there is any kind of official ethical standard of self-care for helping practitioners (Green Cross Academy of Traumatology). We tend to talk about self-care as something optional or even important, but not as something unethical if neglected. Certainly we don’t talk about it as an ethical responsibility to our clients and ourselves.

Reflection on Importance of Self-Care in the Helping Profession:

Specifically, in the helping profession, I think a sufficient, routine practice of self-care allows practitioners to show up to the counseling experience in a way where they are able to function optimally. It also allows them to embody qualities and perspectives they might encourage for their own clients. I think it’s a reflection as well of the work and the goals sought after in therapy.

Identification & Description of Personal Self-Care Strategies:

I am only able to successfully self-care by creating organization of my schedule and time. This allows me to keep parameters for how much energy I expend and it helps me to complete all of my tasks for work, in my relationships, and for this graduate school program. Some things I do under the umbrella of “organization” is set a bedtime where I am able to achieve 8-9 hours of sleep. I also have a daily water intake goal, consume an anti-inflammatory diet (no caffeine), and participate in regular therapy. Socially, I make contact with my closest relationships daily, visit new cafes, and create space for myself to rest or care for my emotions as needed in the moment. Mostly I have found that my physical health directly influences my mental health, so this is an area of self-care that I prioritize.
