If a friend could come over one day and share with you that they are diagnosed with cancer, you would never ever think to say “Toughen up and get over it” nor say it is in their head they will be fine. Why is it that we act this way when a loved one tells you that they are struggling with depression?

Society believes that depression is a weakness, vulnerability, or a deficit in one’s character and not an Illness. There are many distinct reasons why society stigmatizes depression, however these are the most common reasons.

Depression usually has non-physical symptoms

We find it crucial when one claims that they are not mentally okay, yet we see them smile, laugh, and there are no physical injuries. Mental illness does not give an easy visual for not feeling well. Because of this people assume you are faking depression instead of helping you treat it like any other illness.

Lack of awareness about depression

Is depression real? Do you know what you need to do to treat depression? What can be the outcomes of those treatments? This lack of awareness can lead society to be ignorant to those who suffer from mental illness unless we take initiative to educate ourselves.

Negative media depictions about mental illness

When media creates a negative picture of depression, it can also affect people’s perspective of those who struggle from depression which could lead to people to avoid and discriminate depression. Depression is an extremely sensitive topic, and it is subjective furthermore is different for everyone because we do not have the same experiences about mental illness. Fighting the stigma surrounding depression is a journey in which we all must take an active role.

We come from diverse backgrounds, and we face different circumstances, some people who like being alone, who do not like sharing or letting the next person know about their emotions find it hard to speak on depression. We also get people who have ugly thoughts like suicide or feel like they have no purpose on this earth also find it difficult to speak about depression. Acceptance, however, is the first step in understanding depression and knowing how to help.

i would like to start off by saying is
DEPRESSION IS REAL!!
i just feel like will never be able to see when the next person is struggling with depression so we should always be kind to the next person.we are all different so something that can put me in depression might not be the reason for the next person to fall into depression and this is a very rare topic but yet very very important.
depression takes lives amongst the youth and so we should support on another to try and avoid it.

Depression it is a very dangerous illness. As soon as person starts to ignore the feeling because they don't want to be seem as an attention seeker! That's when the demons are overpowering. We commit suicide people would now believe that one was suffering from this disorder. Look there's another on who's still in flash but tired of living we're going to judge them yet we supported the one who took their life. Why can't we do it on this one who's still in flash ? The world is so cruel out there. We should have more organizations who are dealing with this issue.

Depression is real, we don't talk about it quite a lot because one is afraid of being judged at or mocked at, but we need to man and stop bottling things after all no man is an island. Bottling things up will only lead you to commit suicide, I personally would like to hear your story than attend your funeral.
