The livestock sector contributes 14.5% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Provide 17% of global kilocalories and 33% of global protein consumption.

Meat consumption will double over 50 years, from 229 million tons in 1999/2001 to 465 million tons in 2050.

The large-scale, intensive production of crops and animals, often involving chemical fertilizers on crops or the harmful use of antibiotics in animals.

 Also involves crops that are genetically modified, heavy use of pesticides, and other practices that deplete the land, mistreat animals, and increase various forms of pollution.

The Haber-Bosch process combined nitrogen with hydrogen and produce ammonia, which is now the basis of the chemical fertilizer industry.

As a result, two things grew very quickly in the 20th century: the world’s population and the production of fertilizers.

Soybean products refer to food items such as tofu, tempeh, soy milk, and processed vegan meat products

Second generation soybean products are worse for the planet due to their need for extensive processing.

Soybean products remain the more eco-friendly choice over a burger or fried chicken.

Ultra-processed foods are sometimes called “cosmetic” foods, as compared with whole foods.

examples of ultra-processed foods include:

- frozen or ready meals

- baked goods, including pizza, cakes, and pastries

- packaged breads

- processed cheese products

- breakfast cereals

- crackers and chips

- candy and ice cream

- instant noodles and soups

- reconstituted meats, such as sausages, nuggets, fish fingers, and processed ham

- sodas and other sweetened drinks

Sugars- Regularly consuming an excess of added sugar leads to compulsive overeating. It is also linked with health conditions such as obesity, metabolic syndrome type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.

Refined carbs- cause frequent increases and decreases in blood sugar, consuming them is linked with type 2 diabetes.

Increased cancer risk- A five-year study of over 100,000 people found that every 10 percent increase in consumption of ultra processed food was associated with a 12 percent higher risk for cancer.

One to two acres of rainforests are cleared every second for animal rearing and agriculture.

Forests are the natural habitat of more than 70% of the world’s plant and animal species

In 2019, 1.17 million acres of primary forest disappeared in Congo, second only to Brazil’s total deforestation that year.
