CONSEQUENCES:Given the threat to the safety of people, the National Emergency Office of the Ministry of the Interior (Onemi) decreed the red alert for the communes of Villarrica, Pucón and Curarrehue, in the Araucanía region, on the morning of March 3, and in the commune of Panguipulli, in the region of Los Ríos. The agency also ordered the immediate evacuation of the towns within the exclusion zone of ten kilometers around the crater of Villarrica, with special attention to the river courses that are born from the top of the volcano. Around noon, Onemi kept the red alert only in the exclusion zone, while in the periphery the alert went down to the yellow level. 5385 people from the high risk area were evacuated: 3000 in Panguipulli, 2100 in Pucón and 285 in Villarrica. As a result of the changes in both the alert levels and the exclusion zone, the return of the evacuees to their homes was relatively rapid. Classes in the municipalities of Villarrica, Pucón and Curarrehue, as well as the locality of Coñaripe in the commune of Panguipulli, were suspended and resumed on 6 and 9 March.In terms of connectivity, the routes Villarrica - Lican Ray, Lican Ray - Coñaripe, Villarrica - Freire, Loncoche - Villarrica and Pucón - Villarrica, all close to the massif, were interrupted preventively. For its part, the border crossing Mamuil Malal temporarily banned entry into Chile.
