Despite the fact that sepsis affects more than a million Americans each year and kills up to half of them, a new survey published by Sepsis Alliance found that fewer than half of all Americans have ever even heard of the term ‘sepsis.’

What is Sepsis?
Sepsis is the body's response to
infection. In sepsis, the body's normal
defense reaction is amplified, setting off a cascade of events that can lead to
widespread inflammation & micro-vascular coagulation

Political Policies: Sepsis

Sepsis, much like other healthcare issues, is becoming more noticeable among policymakers. This could be because of its increased prevalence and high mortality rate; now more than ever is the perfect time to propel improvement through policy to improve our nations' sepsis outcomes. In 2013, New York became the first state in the nation to mandate every hospital to adopt evidence-based protocols for the early diagnosis and treatment of sepsis. Following the Surviving Sepsis Campaign recommendations and the endorsement of the
National Quality Forum, New York hospitals are now required to utilize
screening tools for early recognition of patients with sepsis, severe sepsis and septic shock, in addition to early goal oriented therapy for the management of septic patients. This has produced a great amount of awareness in different communities.

Unfortunately, despite the advances in sepsis management, the government has not created specific benchmarks or policies like New York for healthcare organizations to follow. The idea is that throughout the collaboration between the local government and healthcare organizations we can change the political view in the topic of sepsis. It will be crucial that stakeholders work together to improve the prevelance of sepsis in our community.
