Break instructions into chunks.

CHECKING INSTRUCTIONS
Sometimes, not giving instructions at all but asking students to look at the activity and tell you what they think they have to do is a good strategy. This can be really useful for activity types which are already known the students.

Giving instructions in the YL classroom

In the beginning of the semester when I first began teaching YL I realized how important clear instructions are. They can be really effective if we plan them beforehand. I used to struggle trying to explain to my students what they had to do. Students just couldn't understand anything at all and they started to ask lots of questions in L1 so as to get the point. I felt frustrated and ended up resorting to L1 to tell them what they had to do. The classroom gets really chaotic when instructions are not clear and to the point when we fail giving them clearly.
Nowadays, I plan my instructions both instructions between activities and instructions to organise activities at home and I usually check understanding by asking one of them to look at the activities and tell me what they have to do. After that, I monitor the class in order to check if they are all doing it properly.

1. If the teacher fails to give clear instructiions, students might get lost and turn to each other for clarification, usually in L1. Besides being time-consuming, this adds to disruption in class.
Since instructions were not clear, students will also miss the point of what is being taught. They might feel discouraged too.

2. To check if students have understood the instructions, I use the ICQ technique adapted to the level of the class.
I model the activity with one of the students.
I do the first one with the class.
It depends on how challenging the task is.

Márcia Vilaça

When teachers fail to give clear instructions, students get lost in the middle of the task, they lose focus and they stop in the middle of it to ask questions about it. Therefore it's very important to make sure your instructions were understood. To check if they really understood, you can use ICQs and you can use some of them to model the activity in front of the class, before you let them start doing it by themselves

When teachers fail to give clear instructions students might feel frustrated and give up during the first try. Scaffolding is very important. During more complex activities explaining the text effectively can avoid students resorting to their native language.
ICQ is an effective way of checking comprehension. Language level should be taken into consideration for it to work in lower levels.

If the teacher fails to give clear instructions, students will fail to do the tasks.
Because of this, teachers will have to remind students what to do all the time. Some students may stop listening, and both teacher and students may feel frustrated. The little ones may get angry because they feel helpless. It is important to give clear and simple instructions in order to avoid all the problems mentioned above.

To make sure students understand what to do, you could model the activity with a student and use ICQs.
