"Your wickedness makes you as it were heavy as lead, and to tend downward with great weight and pressure toward hell; and if God should let you go, you would immediately sink and swiftly descend and plunge into the bottomless gulf, and your healthy constitution, and your own care and prudence, and best contrivance, and all your righteousness, would have no more influence to uphold you and keep you out of hell, than a spider's web would have to stop a fallen rock."

In this quote, it tells us that you are wicked and that wickedness will lead you down to hell. When Edward says "if God should let you go, you would immediately sink and swiftly descend and plunge into the bottomless gulf". It gives the reader an idea of what falling down to hell would feel like. When he also says that even all your righteousness would have no more influence to uphold you and keep you out of hell, it shows that being righteous isn't enough to be kept out of hell and there is only one way to be saved.
-Jose Reyes

"The God that holds you over the pit of hell, much as one holds a spider, or some loathsome insect over the fire, abhors you, and is dreadfully provoked: His wrath toward you burns like fire; He looks upon you as worthy of nothing else but to be cast into the fire; He is of purer eyes than to bear to have you in His sight; you are ten thousand times more abominable in His eyes than the most hateful venomous serpent in ours."

This quote shows that even though God abhors sinners like us and holds us above the pits of hell, he holds back his wrath and keeps us afloat. Edward's sermon and way of talking lets the listeners feel the wrath of God and create fear in them so that they would religiously righteous. Edwards views us as being too unworthy of being in Gods eyes because it is pure and we are abominable.
-Jose Reyes
