I thought that this weeks activities were particularly valuable in many ways. It taught me how to use design thinking by mapping out the start of your ideas by using a cartoon method, which was both fun and helpful. Secondly, I learned that working with others to gain insight on what you can improve upon, when it comes to your own ideas, is very helpful. My team gave me a lot of improvements on how to make my design better and bolder. Additionally, my team was very helpful when going through the interview process because they made me feel comfortable when asking them questions. Lastly, I think that the cartoon drawing didn't work out too well for me because I did a poor job portraying my ideas, but it was still very helpful just going through the process even though it was hard to understand.

This weeks guest speaker taught me multiple different valuable lessons. First, I thought that it was valuable to understand that it is okay to be stressed and show emotions because a lot of times I tend to hide my hide my emotions and my stressors due to it being stigmatized as a sign of weakness. I think that everything that was in the presentation worked very well together, I cannot identify anything that did not work well with one another. Thirdly, what I learned that I didn't know before was that there is something called private stigma. I knew that there was an idea on how people view themselves for looking into mental health services, but I didn't know that the term was called "private stigma." Unfortunately, my team did not participate in the break out room and they had their camera off and were muted so I did not get a response when chatting with them.

Something that was valuable to me in this weeks activity was doing activities that engaged others and myself to use more eye contact. Today, eye contact can be difficult for many people including myself. After, doing the activity where we had to use eye contact and stare into other peoples eyes silently, I then found that I was using more and more eye contact when interviewing people throughout the campus. I did find that finding people who were willing to be interviewed did not work as well for me and when they were willing to be interviewed, students tended to give very short responses.

From this activity I learned that maintaining interest and eye contact was very important when having a conversation or during an interview. Additionally, I found that using follow-up questions was also important because it forces individuals to add depth into their original responses. Lastly, what stood out to me was the importance of open-ended questions. These types of questions allowed the conversations to flow a lot better rather than questions where individuals could answer with a simple "yes" or "no."

From this course I am hoping to learn more about the interview process and how to ask the right questions to gain good feedback from a certain population. Specifically, I am hoping to develop my communication skills my using more ye contact and by seeming more personable to the people I am talking with. Additionally, I would love to develop my sense of awareness when creating interview questions such as what types of questions work and what don't work in relation to difficult topics such as mental health. The experiences I have learned the most from thus far are the group activities. I think that it is important to gain insight on the lives of others and the situations they have faced throughout life. Those aspects can be important in relating to others and growing personally. Lastly, I am looking forward to more group activities and making new friends in this course and for my last year here at UMD.

I thoroughly enjoyed this weeks guest speakers and valued the points that they had to offer. First, I found it to be valuable that the various different ways someone can help their mental health was spoken about during this lecture. For example, the health center offers meditation, counseling, workshops and more. I think that those elements can really help others if they're looking to improve on their mental health or just need someone to talk to. I think that the presentation could have been formatted better in their slides so that it was easier to understand, but the presentation overall was wonderful. With that being said, I also learned that the health center offers such a wide variety of mental health care options. After being on campus for almost four years, I have never heard of these options being provided here on campus. However, I do think it is important for this presentation to be given to students at an earlier time in college because I think it would have been helpful for me a few years ago when I was a freshman.
