What are the opposing views of preservationists and conservationists?

How did Teddy Roosevelt, and other Progressive Presidents, work with John Muir to change the role of the government and the environment? What did they accomplish?

Do you believe the US has been more preservationist or conservationist with the environment? Why or why not?

Conservationists protect/Value natural resources while preservationists value man-made objects and landscapes. A conservationist believes Human activity is the primary cause of environmental destruction. Conservationists desire to regulate human activity but at the same time enhance the economy. Although preservationists have similar values and agree that Human activity is the primary cause of environmental destruction, they want to eliminate human use of the environment. in order to preserve all living things. Aldo Leopold Was the first to introduce the idea of preservation,¨He created a wilderness preservation program to benefit the well-being of all living things on Earth. His idea was to preserve ecology in its purest form and revitalize the original sustainability of the planet¨(The Differences

Conservation vs Preservation: The Differences 2021).
However, conservationists attempt to find common ground between environmental protection and human consumption. According to the National park service,¨President Lyndon B. Johnson In 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson convened a special committee on historic preservation¨(National Historic U.S. National Park Service 2023).

Conservation is the act of protecting Earth's natural resources for current and future generations. Preservation is protecting the environment from harmful human activities. Ultimately it is difficult to determine whether the United States has more preservationists or conservationists when it comes to the environment, as both movements have significant followings and overlap in their goals. However, historically preservationists is associated with the protection of buildings, objects, and landscapes, while conservationists have worked to manage natural resources for sustainable use. There are multiple laws that were put in place to conserve and protect the environment in the U.S., such as the pollution prevention act, the 1897 Forest Service Organic Law, the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, the NEPA, the Wild and Science Rivers Act of 1968, and plenty more. According to an article, "One of the largest conservation organizations in the world, the World Wildlife Fund, was created in 1961 to protect large spaces for wildlife conservation" (NPS, 2023, par. 6). Preservation groups in the United States, such as the Sierra Club shifted from protesting to working with politicians to influence future environmental policy.

Teddy Roosevelt and other progressive presidents worked with John Muir to change the role of the government and the environment. Theodore Roosevelt worked with John Muir by going on a camping trip in 1903, which saved America's National parks. They camped for three nights in sequoias, Mount Rainier, and the Grand Canyon, which saved nature in the U.S. According to an article, "For the National Park Service this trip can be considered the most significant in the history of conservation," (Camping, 2019, par. 7). They noticed that people were rapidly cutting down trees without giving any thought for how it would negatively affect the environment in the future so they started a National park movement. Muir was often called the father of our National park system. In 1892 John Muir founded the Sierra Club and his belief in that club is that wilderness areas should be federally protected as national parks have given generations of tourists and United States citizens a chance to appreciate America's landscapes. Another person that worked with John Muir to help the environment is Gifford Pinchot, who is the "Father of American Forestry". They worked tirelessly persuading presidents and Congress to agree with them to start protecting open space. According to Neh, "This, a system joining preservation with conservation, was the result of his alliance with Pinchot. Muir argued that “every remaining acre of unentered forest-bearing land in all the country . . . should be reserved, protected, and administered by the Federal Government . . . forever," (Humanities, 2023, par. 9). That ultimately resulted in William McKinley signing the 1897 Organic act into law. That law proclaimed that the federal government would preserve new public lands.
