Ishmael knows about the war that is going on inside his country, yet as a kid and with his innocence in tact doesn't show much shock when he realizes that his country is in war, because the war hasn't really affected his daily life, the only thing he really notices is refugees coming from other villages seeking shelter while some keep moving on, trying to avoid the rebels violent tactics . This shows us later in the book how different a person can change from horrible experiences."My imagination at ten years old didn't have the capacity to grasp what had taken away the happiness of the refugees" Pg. 6

This shows us Ishmael's real first taste of fear. With a rebel holding a gun to his head, it's the first time anything like this as happened to him. for the first time something this dramatic happened to Ishmael a piece of him left him. That sweet innocence as a child drained from him. Seeing people get shot, dying, screaming in hopes they make it. He went 0 to a 100 in an instant, Even if people came and rescued him at this exact moment he would still be fucked up. Maybe not to the extent like at the ending of the book. But to see this at such a young age can definitely carve into you "I became afraid, since I could no longer tell the difference between dream and reality" Pg.15

He was "rescued" by real soldiers. Although he's not sure if it's what he wanted. He's been with the fighting group for so long he admires them as his own family. Although there was a time without the drugs, violence, and constant killing. it's the world he had to change and adapt to. for the feeling of killing someone. Now he has to get rid of the way he adapted back to how he use to be. "I still didn't know what was going on, but I was beginning to get angry, anxious. I still hadn't parted with my gun since the day I became a soldier" Pg. 130

Starvation, fear, instincts. it's all survival. When the boys are hungry they steal food from a younger boy and push him to the ground. Although their normal morals wouldn't allow it. They push out their basic morals in order to get the food they needed to sustain their energy. "It was a typical aspect of being in the war. Things changed rapidly in a matter of seconds and no one had any control over anything." Pg.29

Ishmeal thinks he's happy with his new home at his uncle's. However he knows that he lost that innocence he once had. Something a human being can never recover. He want's to hangout with the kids. and play like a normal boy. But all he can think about is how he dug peoples own graves and buried them alive. The time they used people as target practice, It's going to be a lot more difficult than he could of imagined. But the kindness of his uncle helps tremendously " I was worried about living with a family. I had been on my own for years and had taken care of myself without my guidance from anyone." Pg.179
