Due to Japan's small size and mountainous terrain, there were limited options for where the cities could be located. Japan had recently advanced their technology after learning from Europeans which gave Japan the upper hand and ultimately leads to their victory. This shook Russia which lead to the The Russian Revolution of 1905-1907. It also made other countries recognize Japan as a powerful country.</div>]]></description>

In 1844 the king of the Netherlands informed the shogun of the war in China and advised Japan to open up its trading ports or else America would force them to open their trade. After dismissing the advice from the king, the "black ships" from America had come to the shores of Japan. This greatly influenced Japan to modernize and the Netherlands helped it advance their technology. </div>]]></description>

This was favorable for Britain because they both countries didn't want Russia to expand it's empire. This alliance benefitted Japan because having Britain as an ally strongly discouraged France from allying with Russia in the war. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>France had just lost the Franco-Prussian war and was in a weakened state and had lost some of its prestige. Despite this, Japan was still interested to learn from France. This gave France an opportunity to gain its strength back by gaining an ally while helping Japan strengthen its army greatly. France established a military academy where men could learn to become soldiers in the army and also supplied Japan with guns and artolatry. This was a large upgrade compared to the previously used katanas. </div>]]></description>

New trade with the West brought in many products that were new to Japan such as European-style sport venues, English-language newspaper, confectionery and beer manufacturing, gas-powered street lamps, etc. These items were the by-product of the industrial revolution in Europe. Upon seeing all of the goods and new technology Japan was influenced to also learn how to become as successful as these other countries, which led to major changes. </div>]]></description>

Japan thought that colonizing Korea would be a good opportunity to gain more natural resources for a low price. Japan thought so highly of having control over Korea that it fought a war with Russia over the country.  </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>China had been taken advantage of by Western countries and set an example for Japan of what not to do. Seeing the wars in China with multiple countries fighting against China pushed Japan to modernize quickly as it also didn't want to become a victim of western industrialization. Instead, Japan utilized them to grow more powerful by studying their success and development. One common theme among those countries was that they had colonies to get resources from. Japan was very fond of having control over Korea and when China was also interested in having Korea as a colony, conflict between the countries broke out. This sparked the first Sino-Japanese war. Japan ended up winning which led to further humiliation for China. &nbsp;</div>]]></description>

This treaty created peace for the following three decades and also emphasized how much Japan had grown and was a good display of their strength, especially when compared with Russia. </div>]]></description>

Although they came together by using the connections from the Satsuma to overthrow the government. The shogunate was extremely distrustly of Chuso and wanted to imprison him. However the alliance with Satsuma prevented him from such a fate. </div>]]></description>
