"Amy charged between them, protecting Theo like a shield." (653).
While it is never explicitly said within the story, there is a very strong and definitive use of gender throughout the novel. It's shown that this virus and the end of the world was all brought down by men. Their vileness and need for weapons to make them feel better than others drove them to this. But it was the women within the story that found the way to bring the world back to normal. Women like Amy and Alicia who became the only good virals, using their powers to fight for what's right. Women such as Auntie and Sara are filled with immense wisdom that is delved into and explored heavily within the book. As more and more people go to them, Auntie especially, with their problems and it's shown that the women in the story are the ones who truly give the answers to solve them.

"Take care of her. Amy is yours. You will know what to do." (231).
Hope and faith are the two motifs that stick with Amy like butter on a piece of bread. There is no story without Amy, there is no hope without her either. Everyone knows that Amy is the key to stopping the virus, they all have faith in her and the people that risk their lives to protect her.

"We're safe here, Theo, she said. As long as we're together, we'll be safe" (701).
Family and loved ones make you do crazy things just to be together. Theo had left his brother after just reuniting with him to live a normal pre-virus life with a wife and a son. It's clear that this random farmstead in the middle of nowhere cannot be safe, it's out in the open, has no fence or lights after dark, and is completely empty except for the two of them. But as long as they have each other they will be safe, that's how strong a family is. This is shown time after time even in the beginning of the story with Wolgasts fatherly love for Amy. Going as far as to die from nuclear radiation just to keep her safe.

"He's everyone, at least in these parts. I like to think he's kind of like our local god. Not like the old gods. A new god. A dream of god we all dream together" (637).
Religion won't always be seen in just a positive or negative light. it's used for all and has stayed constant throughout this novel. Starting at first with the nun Lacey and her version of god guiding her towards Amy and the bunker holding the 12. But as shown in the quote it starts to develop into some sick idea of a warship towards the only things that hold power anymore, the Virals. The big bads of the story, the twelve.
