Working at the county-level in curriculum development, we have strategically developed modules/units that incorporate the six shifts.

I have incorporated the ELA shift into my classroom by having discussions about any text that we read in class. We use think, pair, share. Also, we have done Philosophical Chair activities. I plan to incorporate more shifts as the year goes on.

I have been incorporating more digital sources and activities in my lessons, including articles online and virtual tours. I use newspapers in multiple classes and have students analyze them for content and structure. Although warm ups and exit tickets often revolve around student opinion and connection from content to their own experience, most of our assignments and projects are text dependent.

For example, we are currently reading Touching Spirit Bear and my students are writing a persuasive piece to convince the restorative circle that Cole's first banishment was successful or unsuccessful based on information I gave them about banishment and custody and evidence from the book. They have to have read and comprehended the book and be able to access examples and find evidence to support their opinions. Many of the questions we discuss in class require them to infer, which frustrates some students because they want a clear answerto cite, but they are able to come to a conclusion through examination and discussion.

In MSDE Juvenile Services Education, we have been working for the past two years on a system-wide curriculum where we have incorporated the shifts in using textual support across fiction and nonfiction when reading, writing, and speaking. We also included a focus on academic vocabulary and shifting the responsibility of learning from the teacher to the students through a balance of expository and literary texts. This is a challenge when working almost exclusively with youth who have huge educational gaps due to dropping out, school enrollment roulette, significant absence history, or skipping certain classes frequently.
