What is the opinion on targeting LOW readers (K-4 grade reading level) vs targeting MID readers (4-8) during guided reading? Example, I spend 20 minutes in my block class dedicated to SSR (Reading Plus - whole group) and guided reading (small group). Is it more effective to have small group with LOW or MID readers?

I teach 6th grade, and I am usually okay with graphic novels at this level. I know the kids like them and they can be a good stepping-stone for low-level readers to get more confidence and enjoyment. I also am personally a fan of graphic novels and I attended a panel over the summer about incorporating graphic novels into the classroom.

Nonfiction is fantastic when we are teaching text features, context clues, etc. There are some kids who LOVE nonfiction. It really depends on your goal for the guided reading. When I do it, I usually mix it up. Some days I use nonfiction to create background knowledge for a fiction piece I am going to give the following day or to fill in when students show they are confused. Unfortunately, LCS is pushing nonfiction because, supposedly, there is a lack of comprehension there. They really just lack the background knowledge to comprehend.
